NEW SKATEPARK IN ROMFORD

Any nice spots/parks you want to tell everyone about?

NEW SKATEPARK IN ROMFORD

Postby bazza5070 » Wed Mar 05, 2014 11:55 am

NEW SMOOTH CONCRETE SKATEPARK opened in Harold Hill, Romford, London RM3. Been open about 4 weeks, great clover leaf bowl, biggest about 14 feet with coping and couple of feet of vertical. Pretty empty during the week and quiet early on the weekends. The Scooters and BMX tend to leave the clover alone - bit to scary I think - and I bumped into some old guys like me last weekend down from Hertfordshire and Kent. Check it out........

AND ITS FREE!!!!!!! (gh)

Any pics or a website or an address? :)

EDIT - I see you have included the flipping address! :P

EDIT2 - Of course what I should have said is - good call, we should sort out a trip there, maybe even combine it with a trip to the old Rom ~.. :)

Guess they had to build that seeing as Rom is closing down.

Saw a few pictures on Facebook, looks a bit like Shoreham from what i could make out.

It's an ongoing joke. It's not really closing.

Sunday afternoon is a good time to go to ROM as you tend to get a few oldies there. Saturday is normally packed with scooters as the mums drop their sprogs off and go shopping for the day at Lakeside. We know this as every time one of them gets hurt ttheir mum is always at Lakeside and gets upset as she has to cut her shopping short

Once I get my skate legs back after the winter break I'll no doubt be making an appearance. Concrete has got pretty rough over the years so soft wheels are a good idea.

There were some pictures of the new bowl at Harold Hill posted up a while ago but I can't find them now. Looks a bit like Biggin Hill but a lot bigger and deeper and if I'm right it also has a run in like Biggin Hill.

Just dropped into the Rom this lunchtime to have a look as last skated there in 1980, place was completely deserted, spoke to the guy in the shop who says its Skateboarders only on Sundays now and a lot of oldies get over there at the moment. Good news is he reckons the scooter craze is rapidly dying out. Must admit it looks a bit worse for wear but then I guess I'm comparing it to 40 years ago!!! Guy said the new free park at Harold Hill is killing his business......

Well perhaps if they could be arsed to clean up the rubbish, empty the overflowing bins now and then, clean the bogs, sweep the park and bail out the water filled bowls maybe trade would be better.

I for one begrudge paying money to some disinterested BMX'er to skate in a shit hole.

Must admit I feel like that as well. Everytime I go the first job is to clear out all the rubbish in the bowls and half pipe, that is if they aren't filled with loads of water. It used to be £5 for a session and now it's gone up to £7 but with a brand new free park just up the road they may find it hard to stay open. Be a shame if it goes as it's a great piece of british skate history.

Must admit it does look a bit of a shit hole and the guy was really disinterested, also looking at the state of the concrete I wouldn't want to be running on hard wheels!!! Red Kryps maybe!!!! ~..

This is not an uncommon theme across the country unfortunately, apart from take your money they seem to do fook all in most places even that seems like a chore for them, I'm always having to pick crap out or sweep out a bowl so it's not lethal

Spent several hours at the new park today.Really liked it (apart from the wax on the coping) but am slightly worried as there seems to be water pushing up through the cracks in several places. Is this now a feature of Wheelscape parks?

Thinking about going saturday morning and wondering if it's easy to park nearby. Looks like there is a sports centre with attached car park. Is this near where the skatepark is?

I didn't bring the broom, someone turned up with it whilst I was there.
When I arrived yesterday morning there were a couple of rollerbladers there, wonder if they were the reason for the wax being all over the place.

Re: NEW SKATEPARK IN ROMFORD

Postby JamesC » Sat Mar 15, 2014 5:38 pm

Just returned from a really good session at Harold Hill. Great to skate a bowl again with pool coping. Didn't have too many probs with scooters as they tended to use the street section but groups would come over now and again and do their follow the leader in the bowl. Morning was definitely better as around midday park started to fill up a bit. The one problem I can see is that there were a number of BMX there who had pegs and used the bowl. Can't see that lovely coping lasting long.

Bowl itself is sweet with a run in that does make things a bit lazy but works well. Concrete looks well laid and is well smooth, and with what I call easy transitions ie, they don't go up fast and are nice and even all round. The main problem I think is that the coping is almost flush with the transition so you hardly feel it, but it does make a gnarly sound though. Some prat has gone round and put so much wax on the whole park that you end up with great big lumps of the stuff on your trucks and wheels. Waterfall at first looks quite steep but once you ride it I'd say it was about perfect. Can catch you out if going too fast as what happened to me. Depth wise I'd say it was about 9 foot in the deep end and it just about makes vert at the coping. Bowl is a bit dusty with concrete dust that can make things a bit slippy at times, but this will go with time.

Worryingly there is a crack around the transition in the deep end that had a small amount of water seeping out of it, picture below does show it a bit but difficult to see what it's really like. Hopefully this won't be a serious problem but not always best to build bowls at the bottom of a hill. I got Mark 'Floater' Maunders to stand in the bowl for a bit of size comparisson.

Just heaed that planning permission has been submitted to floodlight the skatepark, also they are building a bmx track next to it which may encourage them away from the park.

Skated it again today.Starting to find the lines now.Even got the balls up to start skating the spine again,it's been at least 8-10 years since I attempted anything that big.
Workers were there shuffling around the dirt at the sides of the park.I am guessing they are getting it ready to properly landscape.

Soon dried and ended up having a 3 hour sess in lovely sunshine. Really loving that bowl and can't wait to get back.

Great to meet up Barry and love that red Norcon lid of yours

Yeah it was pretty clean, thanks :D Even the ice cream van dropped by

Got there at around 9:45 and stayed to 1:30 and it didnt really seem that busy. Most of them don't seem to touch the bowl which is good for us. I hear there has been a bit of trouble during the week with gangs of older kids threatening the young kids on scooters.

Also see the bmxicans are starting to damage the coping with losts of peg marks, won't be long till they start taking lumps out.

Great skate today with a decent crowd, me knees are feeling it though

Catch you next time
James

Having problems with a group of pikey teenagers, been throwing lumps of mud and stones all over the place. Spent some time with a kid called Josh last week, he introduced himself and tried to teach me to ollie, didnt work! Lovely kid, 16 year old tried to stop the bastards wrecking the place and picking on little kids and got a kicking for his trouble. The local parks police have been patrolling a lot all week but they cant be there all the time. One of the problems of living in the most deprived wards in London I guess. Shame cos most of the local kids are great - the ones that skate anyway 8-)

Do you know what this is I hear about kids setting fire to wood in the skatepark. Thought is was bad enough with all the mud thrown everywhere.

Place is going to be wrecked before it's even officially opened.

Someone set fire to the new play area for toddlers a couple of weeks back and caused 40,000 damage, police nicked them the following week. They got grassed by some skater kids who had some trouble with them, havent heard about wood set on fire on the skatepark though. I am currently working with some of the young tearaways at the moment and even they are pissed off with the louts, am trying to get them to self police the area, they moan theres nothing to do so now they got something they need to protect it!

Getting a bit dodgy there at times. When I was last there there was some punch ups with what looked like 12 years olds. Some non-skatepark kids were attacking a scooter kid. Some of the 12 year old girls who sit on the edge of the bowl with their feet dangling down are getting a bit mouthy as well

Thats the area I'm afraid, 50% of the kids come from single parent homes and 1 in 4 of them have a father or mother whose been in prison, theres a lot of work being done with the local youths but sometimes its like banging your head against the proverbial brick wall. Seen a big upturn in gang membership lately, most of them join for self protection and get caught up in it, does my fuckin head in

To be fair the park is really nice, skatepark is still surrounded by the metal fencing as they have started to build the bmx track next to it. If its gonna be concrete and not dirt it will ne great for skating too as its like a massive snake run with 4 to five foot banking at each end

Well I finally got over to Harold Hill.

It gets a BIG THUMBS UP from me. That's a nice bowl with a PROPER WATERFALL to give you the speed to carve the walls. Coping a bit flush but grinds OK. It's a bit dusty but hopefully that will improve when they finish the BMX track and the grass grows. Right now mud is being dragged in by BMX tyres. If you could educate the BMX'rs to clean their tyres off it will help, but kids will be kids and they don't really think.

Didn't play much in the rest of the park, it was fairly busy. There's a bit of fun for everyone.

Calling a you 5ft bowl skaters....get down to Harold Hill and skate a real bowl. I wish they would build more like it instead of all the boring 5ft stuff.

The bowl is well worth a visit.

Glad you liked it Tony, the park was designed with input from the local skaters so they tried to include something for everyone, I think it works pretty well
