New Bowl for Rotherham

Postby Sam @ FAT W » Wed Dec 02, 2009 1:00 pm

We've got the go ahead and a little funding to put a new bowl complex in Rosehill Victoria Park, Rawmarsh, Rotherham.

There's a little sketch of the initial ideas below, but basically its gonna be a polar opposite of Clifton Park. ie flowing bowls of varying depth and severity.

The funding will only allow us to build about 1/2 to 2/3 of whats in the sketch and finding more cash isn't an option due to ridiculously tight timescales. The site within the park hasn't been finalised yet so the design can't be either, but if there is anybody local who'd like to come along to the workshop on Sat 12th to have some input please do.

Working from left to right the basic ideas are;

8ft deep tight bowl with the possibility of a) taking it to vert b) adding a cradle or c) mellowing it out slightly and having no vert.
6ft to 3ft deep open section with sub box, roll in and hip.
4ft to 6ft deep kidney shape bowl with rollover, steep bank extension and a couple of hips

As I mentioned we need to cut it down significantly so people's input on which bits you'd like to stay would be appreciated.

There is also a fair chance that it may need to be open at one side but this will depend on the chosen location.

We have finally had the site agreed now (for those of you that know Rosehill Park its gonna be next to the tennis courts at the top), but because of this it is gonna need to be open along one side to allow surface drainage.

Project needs to be on site this financial year, we're hoping for completion early May.

Yep. Unfortunately we can't use underground drainage cos of ground conditions on the chosen site.

We'll make it work though

Will do. Probably some point in the week after next (although I fear that'll be half term, so I reckon a dawn raid rather than lunch time).

Park is looking really nicely built!

Duracrete have done a fantastic job so far and the concrete is virtually completed. The site won't be open for at least another week yet - probably a bit more, as there is still ancillary work to complete and concrete will be curing and hardening in this time.

This is going to be fun :D

We went down to check how the crete was today, and I have to say they've done a great job.

There's a few bits that still need sorting, so unfortunately it looks like they're still gonna be on site next week, but I'll keep you posted on progress.

It is longboardable. Just. I had a few runs on my 40" faltown bomb before getting the scary small board out.

A few pics to whet your appetites; but sheesh you guys are in for a treat

The decks probably are finished a bit high/coping a bit low, but it's very consistant. Surface finish is excellent.

Can't promise Friday for now, but fingers crossed...

Well Im gonna go somewhere next Friday/weekend that's for sure! Depends on weather... a dream would be to get to Prissick before the snows come and the North is out of bounds until February again. Then stop here on the way back or up, I dunno.

It's drainage innit...

SUDS (sustainable urban drainage system) - to quote Sam "stops yer hoose gettin flooded when it rains" (he's not Scottish though - just a bit strange).

Seriously though, it takes the water that flows out the drains in the bowls and allows it to slowly infiltrate into the surrounding ground. Connecting into main drains is a bad idea as it just causes all the water to end up in the rivers too quick, then they flood and put half of Doncaster and Hull under water (maybe not such a bad idea then...)

Thanks for noticing our innovative design solutions...

It's drying up nicely though - There's guys heading out now...

Forecast looks ok. Will be out at sunrise or 11am, not sure which yet.

Nice park, albeit a mudbath this morning. Was pushed for time so only swept up the bowl but very impressed - excellent surface, the right side of whippy, coping needs grinding in a bit but that will come with time. I'm sure there are some awesome lines linking the two parts together, but didn't have time to clean up.

But no bins, and loads of empty cans/bottles etc? The local dog walkers seemed pleased there was 'something for the kids to do' but will they still be impressed if it looks like a bombsite every morning? As a skater and employee of Rotherham council I might start a campaign...

Great little bowl, struggling to get the lines ( my problem not the bowls), but a little time will remedy that. Very smooth and fast with a few quirks to add interest, early mornings/ school days required though.

cheers

It's fun fun fun fun fun til the pigs come round
