Taunton Skatepark Designs (Build is underway)

Postby Overseer » Tue Feb 23, 2010 4:05 pm

Here we go finally! The fruits of our labour over the last 18 months. Combined we've raised (or wringed?) 173k out of the local council (23k via parish funding and 50k from developer contributions). Plus 50k form the local youth service (YCF funding) and 50k from community spaces (a lottery fund).

Wheelscape have been on site for just over a week and the park will be completed by May.

There is a facebook group HERE where I've been uploading snaps, Including some from todays user group site visit.

These aren't the final final pretty 3Ds which is why there are some glitches in places. Those are coming at some point, but as a lot of people have been asking I now have permission to post these.

I've made thumbs of the best 2 angles, and linked the other 2 angles below.

The bowl is 4ft in the shallow, which spines over quite a lot of the way round in the snake run/ditch (which has a variety of crete copings, including burnside back corner style parking blocks down the long edge towards the half taco/hip). The pockets ('ball bags') in the bowl are 7ft and 6 3/4 ft.

Well done to you guys. Looks very nice.

I know the bowl has some Filton inspiration here but are you dead set on those 135' hips being hard edged all the way down to the flats? Carve/pump killers!
Only needs the hard edge near the top IMO Same as we have done on the Shoreham bowl.

cheers :)

yeah our crew who have been to filton a lot wanted both hips the same as there only the one is sharp and they always focus on that one when skating there.

Already said it on the Sidewalk forum, but may as well again! Well done Overseer, Ape and Taunton! Can't wait to skate this park.

...and I'd agree on the hip / Filton bowl situation - the harsh hip always gets sessioned whereas the wobbly one is left untouched.

PS - Jellyhead, where does the Lance quote come from?
I think only the ones who have tried to do carve lines without lifting your front wheels up to do double doubles and figure 8's can understand, to everyone else it looks boring. Lance Mountain 2009

@Pigdog : Is the wobbly hip not liked or dodgy in Filton?

We did our 135' like this to keep the bowl fast as:

Aha - I was wondering if that was what you meant! OK, now I agree with you! So the sharp angle of the hip washes out smoothly to the waterfall? Only "harsh" near the top? That does make sense.

The hips at Filton are different to each other - one is angled so you can ollie it etc, the other is a larger curve (like you'd see Salba RnR in a pool). You have to be pretty bloody ballistic to do anything over that!

And thanks for the Lance interview tip - I'll read that now (Overseer - interview is by FO from the Sidewalk forum ;) )

Rob Russ Eric Guy, and the rest of you.... WELL DONE! (AW)

Seriously, I know how much passion and work you put into this project, and I am really impressed with what you guy's have achieved for our town, that design looks like a lot of fun, so many features packed in, it will offer something for everyone.

You should be very proud of yourselves.

Can't wait to carve around that bowl... :D

was talking about this point at lunchtime... the hip at filton isnt hard edged all the way down.. only from about half way up or so.. it just looks liket that in the 3d.

the basic line at filton is figure 8.. whereas this'll be a cross over bowl (pretzel shaped line)

we ended up here basically because although we love the pointier hip at filton, its frontside for goofy footers like me, and backside for the regular footers.. so we wanted equal opportunities :)

this footage of our crew skating filton (taken from the wheelscape site) shows the pointy hip being used and hte other being completely forgotten.. no need to worry about speed i've seen pigdog fly round that thing so we know its possible!

pause at 1:04 and you can see its not sharp all the way down.

Overseer. Cool that you haven't told me to fuck off yet  8)

Have a look at the differently formed angled hips in Maverick's Southglade bowl

Both sharpy and rounded variations of the 135 edged hip.
I still think that the softer 135's will have more skate options to the them. Suitable for both footers and will still be "Carvey air hips™"
I know your hips will be dropping a couple of foot around and above the waterfall. Even more reason to pump over these.

Thanks for hearing me out and considering my interference :D
Nice skating BTW fellas 8)

I will say no more and wish you all the very best b~

hah! %$

thing is... the way the bowl works is based on putting our experience at filton and numerous other parks together. my local regular 'crew' is about 20 deep and between us we've been pretty much everywhere. (over here at least!)

during the pre-tender process we had indepth convo's (roughly 2 hours each) with not only wheelscape, but freestyle, gravity and maverick. marc churchill in particular discussed how hips work with us in great detail.

when talking about bowls we said what we wanted (hips like filton and being able to carve..) but not HOW.

since wheelscape got the job we met them again face to face for another 2.5 hours to discuss things and a lot of that went into the bowl. its been through about 5 revisions, grown huge and shrunk again to get where it is now.

(btw jeremy's home movies of himself skating a variety of bowls in the states and knowledge of others we could find footage of really helped him illustrate ideas and point out why certain things work and dont... you can talk all you like.. but being shown someone skating something, especially when its the designer is a whole other thing)

outside the bowl we were really specific about which elements were a priority, but we basically said.. as long as the function is there things should actively be combined. the #1 desired item by far on the user survey was stairs. but do you see a stair set? that step/bank combo is skateable 3 ways. 1) as a stair to bank gap OR 2) right over onto flat, or 3) up the other way.. and on top of that has the handrail accessible from both sides. it doesnt break park flow and we've got 2 extra 'uses' for something that would have had only 1 if just stairs had been put in.
(and yes it was the all under 14s that wanted them.. believe me i put all 105 survey forms into the spreadsheet.. we're going to force them to do the gap for voting that way (joke) )

we've purposefully tried to be hands off with specifics to a point unless asked. but pretty much every time those conversations have been along the lines of that we expect to do tricks a,b,c... which resolves it quickly.

for example. the entrance to the ditch was first drawn with a hip, but with the option of being how it is now.

when asked, we didnt know which to choose between until i described how people had been mindskating/discussing it in the shop.. it was then obvious it should be how it is now as using it those ways wouldnt have worked with how people expected it to as a hip.

more? haha.. we dont (yet) have one with an hours drive in any direction!

Gravitys park over in Cheddar will finish soon too though.. and thats only just under the hour mark journey wise from here.

One hour each way means two hours less skating time!

wheelscape have just started putting bits on their site..
and have added some snazzy 3Ds.

progress so far.. pretty much all the lower end is done..
that part will probably be finished off next week
(they're working from one end out due to the access.)

detail of the snake isnt quite there.. it has an extra hip thats not shown..
it kicks out just after the right angle corner before dipping back in and changing from normal coping to the special crete thing we're having

Yeah I may be able to make it down ther for the wkd , or on the way home from the next job which will be teignmouth I think if I get sent to Hastings I'll have no chance

Will be a good opening in the sunshine , good to be positive eh?

The snake looks really nice just endless carving frontside grinds then backside grinds ,

i've taken almost 100 build pics which are on the facebook group. i have a meeting at 1pm today so will be taking more.

10 days to the opening.. literally.. dont think the fences will be down for more than a day or so before the event!

Bloody hell, Prime, Taunton AND Shoreham all having official openings on the same weekend?

What a great time for skateboarders eh? *sigh*
I will probably get to Taunton but please give us a heads up if it's skateable on the Friday... 8)
Would love to be able to make all 3 but hey...

i'm pretty sure the fences have to come down friday night without fail as once the crew leave friday they wont be back.
(btw they've already started their next job in teignmouth.. not seen the plans yet)

judging by the progress they've made at the park today and whats left they should hit the mark easy.

some twat grafitti'd the unsealed bowl and polished stone/green glass inlay flatbank at the other end over the weekend. plus it looks like lots of people have been in over the bank hol. dust + tracks from bikes and boards everywhere.. so they do have that to deal with as well before they seal it.

if you still have my # send me a reminder text asking if the fences are down if you havent had message from me!

i'm planning on being there all friday night, all day sat skating/filming a bit etc.. and then chilling and doing meet+greet type stuff along with judging during the opening.. then chilling/skating all day monday :) depends how much my legs can take!

^^ Good job I didn't drive up this morning, I nearly did. :)
Still feeling last night's epic session at Prime tho.

I may have tomorrow off, so have a chance to do Prime's official opening *and* Taunton, depending on which day is dry where.
