Norwood Park Skatepark (aka 'Blob Lands') Development

Postby Scott MacColl » Tue Oct 30, 2012 12:14 pm

Hello Middle Age Shred

I am a Project Officer working on a skatepark project in Norwood Park, SE19, on behalf of Lambeth Borough Council. The project involves the renovation of the disused paddling pool into an area suited for skating. This area might be known to some as 'blob lands'.
The idea is to not to redevelop the site but to design something that keeps the existing charm and general layout. We have funding available and are at the early stages at present with public consultation on the project currently being undertaken to tease out any local issues which we will try to address at the design stage.
We haven't started the design process but we are hoping to get users on board to work with a specialist skatepark contractor to design something which will be well used.
If anyone would like to get involved or knows anyone who does then please feel free to contact me on the details below.
I'll be posting updates occasionally to keep people abreast of progress as we move forward.

Thanks

Scott

Hi Scott, nice one for doing some solid research and posting here. Do you skate? If not you should use the opportunity your job offers to take it up?

Is this the place? I've heard of it before but never been there.

I'm the wrong end of London for this, but I'm sure there will be some South London skaters happy to contribute. Try the Sidewalk Forum as well, perhaps.

thats an Awesome thing you are doing there..
never skated the place but refurbing old parks is brilliant thinking and can only be ultimately good with the right people driving the build..
look how successful it can be with the right help :)
yes yes yes converse is basicaly nike throwing its money around but look what they have done..
http://play.converse.co.uk/2012/05/fix-to-ride/

only the die hard would have even touched kennington before the refit :D
i skated the place ages ago and it was quite bad even then..
back to bloblands please be kind to the old place gently improve it.
use a skateboarder owned company and it will get the love it deserves
all the best and keep us posted

Second that on refurbing but trying to keep the spirit of older parks.

I'd love to see Meanwhile Gardens get a fresh concrete surface but left in the format its in.

Thanks guys for the quick responses. Unfortunately I haven't been on a skateboard in around 15 years but who knows, I could be convinced to give blob lands a try once renovated.
Unfortunately I can't view the video you've posted due to the internet gestapo here at work but I'll take a look at home. There's a photo I took a few weeks back here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/peawithoutpod/8138417141/
Thanks for the heads up about the other forum - I'll look to post something up there as well.
If anyone has 5 minutes spare it would be great if you could fill in our survey (www.lambeth.gov.uk/skatepark) as the more responses we get the better.

Thanks

Hello Scott/ all.

I'd agree with this.

..and this.

I've not been but have heard of Bloblands.

There was an article posted on Crossfire a while back:

..which contained a link to a page on FB:

never went there-heard of it-heard it was a bit lame-

BUT just wanted to say here -how refreshing to hear from someone with access to the public purse strings who actually has the decency and plain common sense to simply talk to the people who will be using this facility-

the council where i am at the moment- welwyn / hatfield - have an atrocious record of squandering/misusing/and losing vast sums of public money-

best of luck here scott-

lot of users at clissold park might help -

Hi All

Thanks Big Kid for filling out the survey, and to anyone else who has taken the time out to complete it.
I actually live just around the corner from Clissold Park so I'll see if I can make contact with people up that way.
I've tried to post a new thread on the Sidewalk forum but I'm not having a lot of success. I think this is because I'm a new member (I was surprised I could post a new thread on this forum without too much hassle) so I've send a message to the forum administrators; however would it be possible for someone who is a regular user on Sidewalk to post something up on my behalf?

Thanks

Hi Scott,

Try giving Stu at Lovenskate a call/email. They're a London based skateboard company keen on interesting projects like this. Also these guys http://www.1skateparks.co.uk/

I've done the survey, but my passport needs renewing so can't come over!

Hi Scott
I have just found this thread – and have also filled out the consultation survey - and I am also a local resident, who often takes his son and nephews to this park. Love to be involved . . .

UPDATE:
A stakeholder meeting is to be held on Thursday 24th October at 6:30pm at the Norwood One O'Clock Club.

We need about 3 volunteers from the skatepark community who have experience of other skatepark developments (and have no commercial interest in the project) who could come and give a talk at the meeting about the good, the bad and the very bad of skateparks.

So, who's free? It would be nice to have a few older volunteers if possible.

I can come to this and say something too if it helps. I have been working with the Southbank Centre and written the brief for their new streetskating spot at the Hungerford Bridge in London, and I have written a book about this the history of skateboarding and skateparks in general – so can say something about either or both of these things. Or will just turn up and pitch in.

It's the project stakeholders meeting this Thursday. Were looking for more people to come along and have a say about the benefits and negatives of skatespots/parks. Details on how to register to attend can be found in the below posts. Please come along if you can!

Just found this, sort of local I guess. That Wheelscape design looks nice and would definitely get me over there.
