this was close to me , we used to live uip there-to this day i still never met anyone who paid to get in-
tight half pipe going into a pretty nice [in them days] vert bowl-
a clover at the top and a rough old snake run that was mad on red kryptonics or an FS1E-
any old fekkers still around from those days? ~..

I lived in Hitchin 88-90, and we'd get up there occasionally. Nice place.

Used to skate there pretty much everyday in the summer holidays :)

My mate's mum (bless her) used to work at knebworth and used to get us in free and give us a lift there and back. The sun shone every day, and we just used to skate our arses off and sit around in the sun chatting. I would say that would have been 78-80. Happy days.

I loved all of it, but most of all I'd love to hit a snake run again. Plus that mellow clover bowl was a blast. Used to do it over and over again dropping form one to the other. Remember trying to get the bottle to drop in that big bowl. Not sure if I ever landed it cos it's so long ago, but remember it being massive. Was it as big as I recall???

Went back in the summer and took the kids to the fort there.

Could not work out exactly where it would have been.

Was always good fun on the snake run.

Still think about it when I go past on the a1.

when did it get buried? I remember a post from last year from someone complaining that he wasn't allowed to skate it as he was too old... maybe that was years ago. I visited on a camping trip in the late 70s, it was pretty rough big reds were needed...

One of my skate regrets is never getting to skate Knebworth even though I lived in Hertfordshire relatively close. Never really knew about it until I went to secondary school and the lad I made friends with on an open day (because we were both wearing skate t-shirts) told me about it.

Was too late, think it got filled in that year or the year before. Anyone remember what year it was I am guessing at 1990ish.

It was knocked down in December of 91.
I went off to America in November and they day I got home I got a phone call to say Knebworth was half knocked down. The bowl and halfpipe was all that was left the next day. These pics are from an article in Skateboard magazine taken by Percy Dean. Shorts on in December! refusing to accept it was winter after spending time in the California sun. There were photos of it all smashed up too in the article but I don't have them unfortunately.
It's such a waste as nothing was ever built on top of it. it's just grass now. I don't think there's much left under the surface to dig out, as most of it was above ground too.
Sadly missed.

Do you know why it was torn down. I a curious? Health and safety? Maintenance? Not used?

As yo say it seems a shame as nothing has been done with the land. Maybe they just thought fuck it knock it down.

from what I remember, it was just an eyesore in the park to them. They always hated us being there once the fence came down

December 1991, that makes sense, I started secondary school in September 1991, if they'd have waited another year then I would probably have managed to skate it.

This is from the owner of Knebworth in August 2007

'For much of the 70s and 80s we had a Skateboard Park just the other side of the Barns that had an excellent reputation amongst teenagers from Hertfordshire and beyond. The knowledge that it is still there, buried under the earth (when we relocated the Adventure Playground), torments my 15-year-old son!'

'Of course, teenagers are an embattled breed when it comes to their entertainment. The activities that interest them do not sit easily with some of our newer neighbours. I also wonder how something like a Skateboard Park would fare under modern health and safety restrictions and current insurance czars.'

like dave says prob not much left-the snake bowl was dug deep so some of that may remain-the vert bowl was mostly above ground so little would remain-i,ll get some pics next time im over that way-

this alf and stacey are ruining all good bloodsports
