7 weeks into a broken Femur (plus gory pic)+ x rays

And still a looong way to go and starting to get very bored.

The pic was taken a couple of days after the op to put a pin down the inside if the bone. It was a spiral fracture that broke the bone into 3 pieces. The op to put the pin in was very clean and tidy with only 3 small holes. The frankinstein looking scar was the result of something called compartment syndrome after the op, my leg swelled so much that they had to slice the muscle to relieve the pressure.

I might give bowls a miss in the future and stick to longboards

Bloody hell! What were you doing to slam that badly?

Hope you get back up and on board soon.

Sore one - hope you've got plenty sk8 vids to keep you stoked on getting on the horse again!

You're going to have some bragging rights with that scar too.....

Seriously - hope you get a good recovery and don't go too crazy in the meantime.

How long til you can get up and about on it?

Cheers,

Re: 7 weeks into a broken Femur (plus gory pic)

I feel for you mate. Broke my femur Feb 2011 - you will see a thread on it - "monkeyfinger down". I am just about back to "normal" now, after eighteen months  although you will be walking within a few weeks hopefully.

I had the pin taken out Feb this year, which I would definitely recommend.
I'd also suggest getting yourself an exercise bike - cycling has been really helpful for me.

That is some zipper! I take it it was from a longboard slam?
There's me thinking longboarding may be a safer option when you're getting on a bit.......

Speedy recovery for ya dude....
I must buy some more sense!

Re: 7 weeks into a broken Femur (plus gory pic)

I'd been longboarding for about 5 years and recently bought a tech slide deck that I could also use in the local bowl.
It was only my 4th session at the bowl when I had the accident, I had learnt to drop in on the 3rd session so was going a bit too fast, I took the first 2 corners and felt like I was flying and then bang I was on the floor saying to my self "I've just snapped my thigh and I need to be at work in an hour". My phone was in my bag at the top and the park was empty as it was early. Lots of shouting followed forthe next 20 mins or so until a dog walker came to my rescue and phoned an ambulance. Loads of gas and air and morphine and a stay in hosp for 2 weeks.
Looking on the bright side its the first summer holidays I've had off with the kids off school for 8 years. We are all getting better at jigsaws

Monkeyfinger, why did you have the pin out and was there a long recovery after. Exercise bike being brought home by the Mrs today funnily :D

Good thing for dog walkers, similar thing happened to me. It's been a year since I did my ankle, but I remember the boredom and frustration of sitting around for weeks not being allowed/able to do anything. Keep looking on the bright side and good luck with the recovery. It's great when you finally get back on board !

Re: 7 weeks into a broken Femur (plus gory pic)

It took much longer to recover from the pin removal than I expected, but it was well worth it.

I had it removed because it aggravated my knee joint, and the bolt at the top of my thigh played hell with my thigh muscle. Also, I have read that if you are unlucky/stupid enough to damage the femur again with the pin in it, it is an absolute nightmare - one poor sod bent the pin 90 degrees, shattering the femur around it and they couldn't get the pin out

I take it you wont be skating alone again btw ;) I was lucky in that respect - I was with Greywolf when I did mine, and the ambulance were with me in a few mins. Fun and games getting me out of the skatepark though.

Re: 7 weeks into a broken Femur (plus gory pic)

18 months to get back to normal is a long time. I am getting about on crutches ok and the physio says poss back to work about xmas time, most of the pain is gone, just 8 paracetamol a day now!! I needed to ditch the morphine and codeine as they were making my brain a bit squiffy.
I return to the fracture clinic in a few weeks so will take advice on the pin being taken out.

Re: 7 weeks into a broken Femur (plus gory pic) + x rays no

The fracture clinic appointment went well and the bones are starting to heal which means I can start to put more weight on the leg with out it hurting. All things considering it looks to be on schedule although the bone mending diet ( no caffeine, no alcohol, no nicotine, no fatty/spicey foods) has been broken a few times and I should be back to work after New Year.
Docs readily obliged to let me get a few pics of the x rays.

Yes, thats definately broken
