colne skatepark

Postby john matten » Mon Feb 07, 2011 8:07 pm

I was in the raz team when we went to open new pool in 1979, we had shogo with us. We stayed in the park over night. The pool was so new the concrete was still drying. Shogo and the team skated the new pool in front of a large crowd and i gave a freestyle demo. Steve gratton was there and was awesome. He also joined the raz team. Team members of RAZ were Mark baker- danny webster- steve gratton- richard jupp- vince scanlon and me (john matten) i cant remember the names of the others so if your out ther please reply. Does any one remember this weekend in 79. COLNE skatepark was awesome but to far from brighton, we were based in the barn, southwick. Last time we all skated together was British skateboard championships 79. I won mens freestyle with shane rouse coming second. Last time i saw shane was in southsea skatepark, he still hadnt got over it, ha ha. Me and my brother paul matten .3B RAMPS (SEE WEB SITE ) were asked by converse uk, to take Rodney mullen to the southbank and southsea. These were great days. If any of you were in raz or were at colne or kelvin grove in 79 please post your comments or even better photos would be GREAT. Thanks for looking. OLD SKATER.

Welcome mate! I was at Kelvingrove for the UK champs in `79, (local park) didnt compete as Dokey, an older ex-park employee convinced all the Glasgow skaters to boycott the SSA that summer (for his own petty rebellious reasons no doubt). So the Scottish team consisted of
Edinburgh and Grangemouth skaters only. Haven´t seen that footage fron Clanskates before,
and despite the fuzzy quality still managed to recognize a few faces.
We went to a comp at Colne in 1979 as well, but I think it was october/november time, not the same one you mentioned as I dont recall Kubo or Mark Baker being there. 8 or 9 of us travelled down in Kenny Omonds VW bus for the w/end,(Kenny´s 60plus and still skates I believe).
Main memories of that weekend in Colne are of dossing down in amongst pinball machines and
not seeing daylight from friday afternoon till monday morning.

Here's a few blurry/grainy pics of Colne, before and after the pool paint job. There's Stephan Harkon, Danze and Steve Grattan (riding a nice powell beamer): -

I don't think anyone ever rode the other stuff at Colne. Apart from the pool it was pretty crap really. Shame because they had a lot of space that could have been used better.

I was there when Shogo skated Colne pool, not sure if that was the same day that the park owner (I think) put a £5 note or some note anyway at the top of the wall on the wall ride in the back right hand corner of the park. I think there was about 6 - 8 foot of vert to ride up to try n grab it. Got close but Steve Gratton got it (tha bugger). Shogo signed my Lonnie Toft 10" deck that day, great times great pool, great day.

Went there once, as it was nearly impossible to get there on public transport, we were too young for cars at the time, the pool looked massive, we mainly messed about on the wooden Half pipe & ramps, but did have a few goes in the pool, nothing like we were used to, still don't know anything about the place like who set it up, when it went, etc. :)

A few of us used to travel from Lverpool and skate colne.
The owner would come and meet us in liverpool and we'd cram into the back of his transit van and we'd stay all weekend.
Stef harkon, Neil danz, dave davis, craig tagoe, me and maybe one or two others?
The pool was good and there was a ramp at the back that was quite a good ride but it was up against a wall so you couldnt rock n roll it.
The owner (cant remember his name) to wear wooden cloggs!
We had some great times there.
too sore to skate, too old to fall... oh happy days, eh!
