The aircooleds are lovely but the waterboilers do nothing for me i'm afraid. :?

I was heavily into VW's from about 86 to about 92 and had a blue Type 1 that was featured in StreetMachine and Volksworld magazines...

Yes that is Neil Danns on the poster. They paid for him to come all the way down from Liverpool to the DERA test track at Chobham where the photoshoot was done! They did ask me to do it, but I politely declined
Don't be fooled by that bright sunny looking cover shot, it was shot on the beach at Shoeburyness, Southend on a freezing Febraury morning.

i remember your car dave all to well ,we must have been at the same shows in the 80's
me & the paintbox crew (simon /shane) go way back to the early dayz of cal in the uk
ritchie king from german car co ( now karman konnection)was also a great mate for me whilst building my 54' oval ,he brought doors ,semaphores & all sorts back for me from the so cal swap meets, this was before the days of empi & west coast metric doing ALL repro parts.
being in the region of the mecca of the uk cal look (sarfend) scene had it's bonus's.
the beginnings of the race scene was great (vwdrc),with the likes of keith sueme stepping up from the yellow fast back to the imported chopped turbo oval ,to luke & co (from terry's beetle services)having the baddest bug on the track ( moody)..till it got knicked from their workshop..

porsche turkis blue..THE cal colour of the 80's..the danz pic from street machine was on the wall of my workshop if i remember right...
remember no worries?..i was sponsored by them for skating 89>92 ,also quite a few of the dub shirts they done were designed by me.....small world innit....

i'm still a member of outlaw flatfour in the uk
http://www.offdrc.co.uk/

i brought my 54'street /strip car to australia with me ..i could never sell it ,it's like skating it's what i do..end of..
i'm currently in the middle of doing a performance disc brake conversion on all 4 corners .
the scene here is smaller, but alot more 2nd hand bits seem to be available,( as the cars never got the dreaded road salt here)
great to see pics from the blighty shows.. 8) 8)

We must've crossed paths often then Boomer as I was at all those shows (Bug Jams starting at the first one, first Avon Park and onwards and the London and Thames Valley Stonor Park shows) and ended up being a judge at one Bug Jam with Brian Burroughs too..
Funny how I met Brian, but when I was at school 2 of my mates were heavily into this Metal band form Liverpool called Spider, later when I got into VW's I used to see a LWB GP LDV Buggy drive past where I lived at the time near Heathrow and when I tracked the owner down it was Brian Burroughs who was the bass player Spider and he lived just around the corner.
He was a graphic designer at the time but now has retired to France but I'm pretty sure he has a lot to do with Volkzone forum.

I remember Richie King very well (nice guy) and spent an afternoon at the ITV HQ on the South Bank with him and Keith Sueme (Uncle Keith me and Brian used to call him) being filmed for a TV spot with Emma Freud that was never used
In fact in 87/88 I had a Turkiss blue Wizard Roadster that I remember Richie having a good look over at a show at the Stroods Motel outside Brighton. Shortly after he produced his Turkiss Blue Ghia and I've often wondered if he got the colour idea from that. Who knows?

Keiths' fastback was orange though wasn't it?

Terrys' Beetles was just up the road from me in Hanwell although I never went there much.
Was it you then who used the Benjy skull design as that was used by Paintbox wasn't it, or was it Thump Thump?

I also remember having a great trip to the French "Super VW Nationale" show I think it was called just outside Paris with Brian and his Wizard and a few other UK cars inluding the Billabug.
Good times...

i remember brian winning the best of show with his white wizard roadster in the early bug jams.
ritchies blue hardtop removable ghia was also a groundbreaking car.

paintbox painted brett hawksbee's 356 speedster after this first livery intro

then brian got invloved & morphed it into the outrage race team

this was us (paintbox /gallagher crew) at north weald 2005 with the freshly painted inch pincher replica

the latest Golf GTI (mk6) is nearly double the weight of the mk 1 Golf GTI  ....... fair bit quicker though

The current Polo GTI is the same size as the mk 1 Golf.

Is it in bad taste talking about anything German considering recent events lol!

I've had lots of vw group motors over the years - but due to high mileage/reliability requirements have never been able to to treat myself to a decent older model for the fun aspect.

I agree with you about the early gti's being and looking better. The other change over the years is the build quality - whilst not a true gti, I have had Mark 4 and 5 gt tdi's and can honestly say that the mark 4 was far superior to the 5 in that respect. Didnt they start either building the cars or major components somewhere else between these 2 models?

Nice dubs.............South Africa was actually the last country in the world to make the Mk1. I think that they finally stopped production in early 2010. People over here still go crazy for it.

well the start of the 80's was 30 years ago so like it or not that makes the 80's retro. if i had an 80's board it would be retro, 80's music and haircuts are retro. im 37 so to the the 70's/80's is retro to me, i take it your in your 50's and earlier stuff is retro to you?
