Just had my first go at making my grip a bit more interesting. Anyone else got good ones to share?

Those are both very cool !!

Silly question time - how are those done ? Are the designs cut out before the grip tape is put on the board, or do you cut out the design after the grip tape is put on the board? What's the technique, what tools do you use, and any tips ?

Seriously thinking I need to do this to my board !

Have a quick forum search and there's a few post about custom grip jobs, you tube has a few vids too

I do mine in the board ,

I got a £ shop scalpel set . I don't use the knife I hold just the blade

Score it a few times , not to hard .

When my out lines there I use a fresh blade just to apply tiny pressure and cut remaining backing/ glue . Then design comes off in one .

Not got pics to hand but I've done loads , an old deck I had , consisted of a small jug saw piece , PAC man , and a loop running across board and knotted . Was really proud of that one

I find it just brakes it up ;)

Cheers Pearce - just to make sure I've followed what you've said, you cut your designs out AFTER the grip tape was already stuck to the board ?

Reason I ask, is that there are threads on here (that I found thanks to Ash's suggestion to search the forum) that suggest doing it BEFORE the tape is stuck on the board. Trouble is, if I have to do that I'll probably end up getting myself a new blank board and start from scratch and get my own back board graphics too. And right now I don't have the money to spend - so if I can just cut the tape on my exisitng board, as I think you are suggesting, that would be fantastic !

Yea I cut it out after grip applied

Reason being , you have got to be firm , yet gentle . It's the only way I can do it .

If your doing lines like the grip above in the long board , cut the original line to divide , can do such things like zig zags, curves etc .

I personally find detailing grip before its applied a bight mare as you just can't work it right as there's nothing under it to apply your creativeness to lol

Be care full thou as you don't wanna be pushing to hard and scoring into the board . Tbh thou I've never done so not even when I started
Hope this helps

One last question (sorry) - do you use a stencil and cut using that, or do you draw the design on the grip tape and then cut that ?

Hey Rich,

Just as a different view, I stencilled mine onto the grip and cut it out before I applied it. I had to make a few measurements and marks to make sure it lined up properly once I applied it, but I wanted to avoid scoring the hell out of my deck. Just go with whatever you're more comfortable with I guess.

Just did it in freehand , no stencil . Copied what I wanted ( that was directly next to it )

In reference to above , it's just about technique really , as ive never scored a board luckily

aha I knew there was a thread for this somewhere. Just decided to get a bit more experimental when re-gripping my welcome deck yesterday:
