Skate Photography

Postby Nut » Sat May 28, 2016 12:37 pm

I'm determined to get the sensor cleaned on my main camera (30D) but in the meantime I'm stuck with a crappy 1100D.
It's slow and unreliable but still capable when it's teamed up with the 15mm.

I'm pleased enough with this one to post it again:
Shoreham, 9.44pm under the lights, 1/15 sec. f/8 15 mm ISO 200

Post your best photos! Video stills are allowed as is a reasonable amount of retouching :)

I would if I could get the link to flickr to work to embed my picture. Any advice?

not a flickr user, just went to have a look and it seems to be a bit wobbly. Will have a look later. There is a 'flickr=' button, I'm guessing it just needs a photo id.

I'm using the flickr button but can't get it to work. Tried the Img one too. How did you embed yours, Nut?

Nice photo by the way

Wasn't sure about this, i'm a fraction early. Is he just a bit too contorted or do you think it works?

That works. Looks good to me. The only thing I'd do, if you ever shoot that again, is move a foot or so to your left. That way he would be silhouetted against the grey sky and away from that tree in the background.

Jussi Korhonen. I think I ought to start using a flash, to make the subject stand out more against a very cluttered background.

Could you not use a coloured filter effect when you turn the shots into black & white to darken the green of the trees?
Maybe that would help the subject stand out more (as long as they were not also wearing green).

I tried that - I converted the photos to B&W in Lightroom and there's a choice of red, green and yellow filter effects. They help a little, but with a flash you can underexpose the background and make the subject really stand out

Using flash and under exposing the background is much better than using post production masking. Looks good on skateboard photography.

Is that Rio? There's been some great progression from the vert groms this year. Saw a pic of Lucio in the middle of a rather large BS air earlier too.

Good year I reckon.

It is Rio, I think. Some of the young vert skaters are getting very good indeed.

You are using a really slow shutter setting (deliberately?). Your pictures are blurred and not focussed correctly as a consequence. Don't rely on a cameras autofocus in bad light, pick your intended focus point and pre- focus and hold it until the subject has arrived.

I'm happy with this one - has an almost vintage feel to it; and after faffing about trying angles and faulty flash firing, I just shot this from the hip. Similar exposure setting to the above.
