Grumpy skaters

Just wanted a rant about rude people.

I've always been a friendly person and I like to believe that other skaters/longboarders are part of a wider community, so I am always polite and try to make friends with people I see boarding when I'm out and about. I often get waves or salutes from other guys and lasses on their skateboards and often end up chatting.

Yesterday I was out on my longboard I've just put some holey trucks on, new bearings and a borrowed set of Abec 11 freerides. I was having an awesome session and found a great little street carving course with some good turns and obstacles and I had a big throbbing stoke on.
Anyway so I see another guy on a slalom/cruiser deck who was wobbling by, I stopped, took of my helmet and said 'how's it going mate, found any good spots?'. He looked at me like I was a total c%nt and with complete indifference, looked away and skated off (very poorly and wobbly I might add) down the little route I had just been skating. "Nice chatting with you" I said.

Now maybe he was foreign or maybe he was deaf but I'm pretty sure he wasn't, understood me and was just a bit of a penis. There should be an unwritten rule that if you're a w@nker you shouldn't be allowed near a skateboard. Anyway, I jumped on my board and bombed passed him carving it up.

Anyone else come across tossers like that?
So I joined some local kids for a jam. Good sk8, few disasters but no injuries. I bid them farewell, coolly pushed off down the transition, hit a stone, skidded head first across concrete, grazing my arms to the bone, destroying my jeans and knees. SMOOTH

Re: Grumpy skaters

I posted this comment on Face Ache last week But I remember back in the 80' if you saw someone in a pair of Vans you knew they were a skater where as these days even if they are wearing Vans an Indy Hoody and on a skateboard it still dosen't mean there a skater. They could just be a fashonista knobhead who happens to have board to create the right look.
Plus the fact you are down in the south east where if you talk to anyone you don't know they call the police. :D
If you didnt wear a fedora you weren't really there!

I know what you mean. For example- Vision Street Wear became pretty much nothing to do with skating.
Yes the south east is very like that generally. People even hide from their neighbours down here. I'm actually an exported Glaswegian which means everyone i speak to in the SE has the added fear and thinks I'm going to stab them.

I really don't think he was deaf though. I spoke, he stopped, looked at me and kind of shrugged. Maybe he was French. Oh and I kind of waved as well.

Ha, one of the important lessons in life: Wankers are everywhere -they even participate in your favourite hobbies. Sadly the fact that you have that in common with them doesn't make it any better.

Saying that, I think that skateboarding attracts quite a small proportion of idiots compared to other hobbies.

So true about the Vans. And we don't call the police down south - if your a man and you talk to another man you don't know we assume you are gay :)

Thats correct you would assume that because of the huge number of gayists south of Sheffield !

Still is! Saw few days ago a photo of Rihanna wearing a Vision Street Wear t-shirt... you know the one, the one with the logo. We all had it or knew somebody that did (maybe is just me because I lived not too far from where the italian VSW distributor was). Anyway, back to Rihanna, I'd like to show her a pic of me at 12 wearing that t-shirt and ask her: "You're wearing what a 12 years old boy would've being wearing 23 years ago... still feeling hip much?"

This?

Hundreds of websites are pointing to how you can get the Rihanna look buy coughing up £125 for a VSW t shirt  Do you think they'd all be falling over themselves to get this look of they knew that the trainers are available in Sports Direct for less than 20 sovs?

Had this conversation with the 21 year old fashionistas at work (guys as well) regarding the Vans one of them was wearing......no idea they were skate trainers then asked me if I had heard about Osiris because they're "the trainers to be seen in"

I punched him in the Vagina then ran off into the woods

I cannot believe the fashion victims.
Now I admit to getting a couple of pairs of the Vision shoes but at 18 nicker it would have been rude not to!

Would I wear them "out" as a fashion statement? No, I'd wear them out as they were the nearest pair to the door.

And 125 quid for a t-shirt!

I live over near the hospital and occasionally skate to work in the centre of town. This being Cambridge it’s very hard to find any decent hills where the street is wide enough to do a bit of carving without being immediately run over; have you found anywhere decent?

"Decent" is very subjective, as there are no hills around Cambridge and far too much traffic, perhaps Madingley Rise (Google 52.214174,0.092912) could be considered decent. It's only about 200 meters long and isn't much of a hill but it has been resurfaced recently and it's a dead end only servicing a couple of University Departments. I come through that way when I skate to work.

You should try to get to Hog Hill (Redbridge cycle centre) for the longboard/slalom event this weekend http://www.facebook.com/events/276278752468470/
Only a hours drive from Cambridge via Epping and Abridge.

as some one who lived in cambridge for about 5 years this ain't unusal-cambridge is one of the most stuck up,cliquey, unfriendly places out there-if you want a good session with some nice friendly people take a trip out to saffy, theres usually a good mix of old and young skaters there on a weekend-no stress or bad vibes no matter what your skating ability-even tony hawks grandad(aka greywolf-btw hows the Dwarf thing coming along ?)got a few runs in and ripped the place up,well between telling the most god awful jokes and taking the piss out of des

You think skaters are grumpy? Try surfing. They ARE a bunch of c*nts.....and i am a surfer and have been for the last 7 or so years.

There's no "well done awesome ride", no appreciation of others skills, no sharing the stoke....just selfish twats who scream "outta my way", drop in on you, stare at you as if to say "fuck off".....no idea why surfers as so arrogant.

Me and my mates stand out like a straight man in a gay parade. Shouting, whooping, encouraging others to go for, saying how awesome others were on rides....

Skaters have a great community. I love it!

Agreed about the surfers! Some times you get a "hi." but thats about it. Which is why I always try and go surfing with a bunch of mates (and holler like an idiot when I catch a good 'un). Even worse are the kayakers though... especially when they wipe out, fall out, and then leave it up to you to dodge their boat as it rolls into shore... The scootards of the sea

I know what you mean about surfers so it's always best to go with a few mates and make the moody, territorial ones the minority rather than feeling like an imposition. I think the thing with some surfers is they feel like an elite breed and they sure as hell don't want to encourage more people in the ocean, riding sets they regard as theirs. I can kind of understand it to a point, particularly if someone has been waiting out abck for an hour and the perfect set rolls in only to be hijacked by someone on a stag do riding a soft poly surf board. But!!! I definitely think there should be more brotherhood and stoke sharing.

I agree with all that has been said about surfers......but then again I far prefer to surf alone or with 2 or 3 friends in the water at most.

Yeah, surfing kinda sucks on the bromance scale.

I was lucky to have been a surfer in Brighton a (good) few years ago when I had more time, that scene was a lot friendlier.

Nowadays I'm the tourist in Ben's "Faraway North Devon".
