The similar circumstances of their passing is almost unbelievable. Jay had been a troubled soul and probably not universally liked but he did appear to be more humble in later life. RIP in the every sense of the word. I grabbed this image from the video. Kind of appropriate.

RIP Jay

Here's a quote from Stacy Peralta that's in Thrasher "I received a text very early this morning from Alan Sarlo who is in Mexico on a surf trip with Jay and some others. In the text Alan said Jay had died of a massive heart attack at 1am this morning. Alan was apparently holding Jay in his arms as he passed. The news is and was devastating. Jay was the essence of skateboarding, 100% inside and outside, as pure a form of skateboarding as we may ever see. He was skateboarding incarnate. I spoke to Jim Muir as well as Steve Olson and a few other skaters this morning and Jay’s passing, as shocking and unexpected as it is, has reaffirmed in all of us our deep love and respect for each other as well as confirmed to us how we’re all connected. We’re all Zboys, we’re all skateboarders, we’re all a part of this tribe, rolling along together, now and forever. —Stacy Peralta"

I was gonna keep quiet but I wouldn't be me if I did. Jay Adams is dead. He was never my 'hero'. He looked cool in skate pics when I was a kid, but I liked Jerry Valdez & Shogo Kubo more. By all accounts (including his own) Adams was a nasty (nazi) racist, homophobic,drug-dealing twat who tried to cajole his 'fans' into getting him out of his self-made financial shit several times. His racist queer-bashing led to someone's murder. I feel slightly sorry for someone who must have had a really shit upbringing to turn him into such a cunt, but I shall not mourn his passing, but hey-ho, he looked good in some pics in the 70's.

With respect Tim….. He wasn’t particularly a hero of mine, however, this is about acknowledging the passing of Jay Adams the Skateboarder, not Jay Adams nasty (nazi) racist, homophobic,drug-dealing etc etc.

Perhaps that could be better debated on a thread about Jay Adams bashing.

Maybe I wouldn’t have got in to skating had it not been for lines of coincidence around that time in my life, the same lines that bind us together on here, the lines laid down by Jay Adams (skateboarder) and the rest of the west coast skaters/surfers at that time.
Just my opinion.

I'm sorry but that makes no sense to me at all. It's one person, not two. Lets take it to its inevitable internet conclusion and ask if you'd forgive the extermination of the Jews and mourn the death of Hitler if he could pull a a few frontside airs?
Is Gator still a great guy in your book? That murder thing is neither here nor there because he could do some tricks, right?

I get on with load of skaters, but not regardless of what they are really like as people. If they're out to deliberately destroy other people's lives because they're black or gay, I'm not gonna call them friend.
Yes I think of many skaters as my brothers, but I also think of some black and gay people as my brothers, because I'm not into weird, unintelligent discrimination and blinkered tribalism.

I do hope Jay made some amends in later life...not just saying, "I like Jesus now, can you let me off?", but I've seen no evidence of such.

Yes I know he had a shit time in his youth, hence I feel slightly sorry for him, but I went to school with two guys who had a similarly shit time and ended up as violent drug dealers, yet now both of them work full time with under privileged children and do great work for the community. As far as I know, all Jay did was say "I've turned to Jesus, pay off my tax bill cos I was gnarly"

Feel free to correct me with evidence if I've got any of this wrong.

with regard the Nazi thing, dig around on the Juice site and you'll find an interview with Jay from about 12 years ago. When challenged on that whole thing, he said it was all about terrorising people on the waves etc extreme localism blah, blah, blah. I don't think any of them gave a minutes thought to the holocaust etc, there'd be absolutely no connection! The swastika on the boards was a shock thing. I'd imagine we'd all feel a bit sheepish over statements we made in our youth, especially with the majority of us coming from the generation that delighted in pissing off our peers etc I remember seeing footage of Duane Peters at a comp that was televised, with bleached hair and a swastika dyed into the side of his head, and before anyone screams "and look what's happened to him!" I think that whole image was "of it's time" and certain individuals are dining out on it still.
I don't believe for a second any of them were doing it to show any sort of alliance to racism/homophobia, quite the opposite. I mean look at the areas they grew up, you wouldn't last a minute! The fantastic thing about skating is that it draws from all walks of life, nobody cares about where your from, it's where your at and how you carry yoursef
I honestly think they all got a bit embarrassed by it all in later years, maturity I 'spose.

You forgive the person, not the act. It seemed like he was remorseful and trying to be a better man, how the fuck can we truly know if we're not in his head?

I don't idolise Jay Adams unlike my 19 year old housemate (which shows his impact on skating) and in many ways his life was tragic. To me he always represented a beautiful mind and talent torn apart by his inner demons, or whatever cliched fucking phrase you want to insert. No, not a role model, not even a likeable man in many ways and to many people. What saddens me is that the beautiful mind within never got the chance to win.

I believe he did a lot of work with kids in schools in later life, trying to steer them away from drugs and the path he went down.He made some serious mistakes growing up and he paid the price. As far as I am aware,he came to realise that he had fucked up and tried to be a better person.I am sure that if he managed to make one kid think about what they were doing and the consequences,he deserves some respect.

I think its worth defining what most people want to celebrate about Jay Adams life. It was his talent, devil may care attitude on a board and innovation that was so unquestionably exceptional. He skated and surfed in a way that only a few of our generation could comprehend and follow. For this I am grateful and in awe.

Of course like everyone else on here I did not know him personally. From what I have read and seen he had a lot of weaknesses and shortcomings. Pointless me celebrating Jay Adams the man but the athlete is another story.

Beware the idolisation of hero's especially those from the early stages of 'extreme sports'. They generally were man/boys with a could n't give a shit attitude , athletic ability and unfettered imagination. Great subjects for photos but probably not someone you would want to marry your sister.

Evidence.... is this a trial?

Am I labouring under the illusion that this was about the passing of a bit of our /my youth? Maybe even some nostalgic memories of a great skateboarder from WHEN WE WAS YOUNG?

As I've already said, Jay Adams's misdemeanours might be better debated on a seperate thread. Hitler, Gator, frontside airs and extermination of the Jews .....Discuss.

" not into weird, unintelligent discrimination and blinkered tribalism". Funnily enough neither am I. We dont need lecturing on it ...... thought for a minute there I was back at school with mi trousers round mi ankles.

I can't judge Jay for good or bad as a person, cause I didn't know/ met him in real... but like it's said only god can judge him.
But in my eyes he's on board a milestone in skateboarding and brings it a life... so much respect for that

Beware the idolisation of hero's especially those from the early stages of 'extreme sports'. I've met Miki Dora, briefly spoken to him, surfed along side him at a secluded point break in Ireland and watched him surf circa 1984. I was well aware of who he was and that he had reportedly been arrested in France with multiple passports and been smuggling cocaine in snowboards amongst other things. A criminal, I certainly don't and never have idolised him. Nevertheless his demeanour exuded a certain aura, whether it was real or all in my mind I don't know, the "superstars" can have that effect on us. They are what they are and part of the history of our chosen sports.

Once again showing your ignorance, if it wasn't for Tim you wouldn't be hearing anything on here as the site wouldn't exist. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, especially you it would seem judging by your past posts. For a second there I almost felt like baiting you about this subject in the same way that you baited others on your childish teachers thread but realised that would make me as big a cunt as you.

Ooh I do like a bit of handbags on here, immaturity & stupidity knows no age barriers, love it, we all have differing opinions just live with it & skate people!

Jay Adams was one of the skaters who featured in Skateboarder magazine (very well thumbed as only one well out of date copy between the lot of us  ) who inspired us when we were kids tootling about on the streets, skating pools & parks in California a small window into another world way beyond our reach, a world away from our shitty little place, no facilities whatsoever & generally unpredictable rubbish weather for skating, a lot of good skaters were not very nice people (just like in the real world), just big headed competitive privileged shits, some of which screwed it up big time because they were fuckwit idiots & not just the US one's but some here as well, so for me It's those early skate memories that have been invoked with this news, 53 way too young, I wouldn't wish death on anyone whatever their past, Maybe he was a better person recently but that doesn't absolve any wrong doings & stupidity of the past, but at least shows he might not have been a dick any more, hopefully. :D
