Bay 66 /Pioneer Old Boys' nights

Postby Neil » Mon Feb 10, 2014 6:16 pm

Looks like we've got Old Boys' nights at 2 venues at the end of the month and the beginning of the month. Which is awesome. I've not stopped grinning since Saturday!

But it does strike me that a lot of middle of the month is looking a bit barren.

Thinking Bay66 might need another visit to fill the void, so to speak... Perhaps a Friday or Saturday? 21st/22nd in Feb.

If anyone fancies it, I'll see you there!

Looks like another month where we have the last Friday of the month (bay 66 old man night) the day before the first Saturday of the month (unit 1 rad dads), so I might do unit 1 this time as I've never been before. Then back to Pioneer the following Friday (7th March) for their first old man night!

There is a bit of a gap between now and then - I'd love a nice dry session outside on concrete at Potters Bar, if the weather allows it ~..

There isn't an official old man night but Tuesdays at the XC is Skateboard only night 7pm-10pm

Also Sunday nights late session is mixed but a good bunch of skaters

Going indoors is the only way of getting a skate in the week at the moment.

Considering going tonight but not sure if I have the energy/stamina

Actually on balance I will probably go to bay 66 at the end of the month, rather than unit 1, because I know it is good, you get a free beer, free food, and also I know how to get there! :P

Wonder if the XC bowl counts as a vert ramp? The roll in from the shallow end into the deep end doesn't encourage skating it that way, but going side to side in the deep end it effectively is a vert ramp isn't it? Perhaps the bowl is really designed for bmx's though - the dimensions are huge!

It certainly does in my mind!

I shall be padding up for the pool and maybe the bowl too ( I never really skate it) all in the name of progression

Yeah I sometimes wonder if it would be better as 2 separate bowls? Its a little too big

It was just an excuse to get a mid month skate in. Was gonna head down to 66 tonight and if anyone was up for it I'd see em there... All pretty casual really, but turns out I can't make it anyway! See you next week with a bit of luck!

Getting home is a bit of a bugger for me if it runs til 12 so may bow out. Also not entirely happy with my setup, think that little tumble I took was partly down to wheel bite since was trying to get used to how loose the trucks were (that and me being dozy). Tinkered a bit but want to get some proper skating in to test it before trying something as tricky looking as Pioneer ~.. That and I'm still really not comfy with the little round tail.. Found myself struggling to get my back foot planted securely when I was riding into things the other night.

Yeah it's 9-12, bit of an odd time but I guess they think we are old enough to stop up that late now. 8)
I'll be happy if I manage 9-11 before heading home for bed.

j roach wrote:want to get some proper skating in to test it before trying something as tricky looking as Pioneer

There are parts of the place that are less daunting than others, for instance over on one side is a gentle flat roll in onto some flat that leads up to a quarter pipe. Judging by last time we went, for the private hire, there were about 18 of us skating and it didn't feel stupidly busy. Although any more than that and it might start feeling less chilled out I reckon.

Here is the flyer again - posted in another thread already...

Busmans Holiday for me!
I'm happy to do the wheelwork home for those in the postcodes.
:D

As for daunting...
Truly, I am the worst skater on here, my level of Shitness must by now be becoming legendary amongst the regular guys here.
People come on here saying "I'm shite" but when the see me they quickly realise what shite means...
Anyway, if I can 'get by' at Pioneer anyone else can.

Well bugger. Just got back from the doc since still in some pain after the tumble on Friday. Reckons I've slightly cracked a rib on the point of an old fracture, so that puts me out for sure on Friday :( He suggested 4-6 weeks out, but hoping to be able to make bay 66 at the end of the month ..-

If you can't get your hands on powdered Gelatine
Eat a chivers jelly every day/ just eat the squares.
If it doesn't work (you'll have wasted 50p a day)
And if it does (it will) in 7 days it'll feel better, in
14 days you'll barely feel it, in 20 days fixed.

I cracked rib in Jan, was skating again on day 10.
:D

Doesn't hurt to take VitD and Calcium too but being
Oldies we all take our Vits every day anyway.
Don't we?

Cheers for your kind comments chaps. Immediate panic over for now, nothing like scary phone calls in the middle of the night and a bit of motoroway racing to the acute hospital ward to put the wind up you. I won't go on about it, lots of us on here are at the age where our parents are getting old, might be a little while before I am out on board again though.

Hope she is ok Ben.

Just seen a post on that evil site people love to hate.

Anyway it is imperative that the numbers go up for Old mans Night at Pioneer. So it is literally use it or lose it.

So Ben aside if everyone could make the effort to come on Friday that would be great. It's not the greatest place for my "skills?" however it has been great to actually be skating when otherwise you couldn't with our rubbish weather and the darkness of the night.

Really sorry to hear that Ben, hope she is well.

I'm still in despite no real skating for months I saw the Facebook message as well, so will come along for an hour or so, even if it's only for a chat rather than a proper a skate.
Please ignore the above post, I have nothing of merit to say.

Shit
Are we in danger of losing it?
I'm happy to come if we are.
Ain't gonna be much skating tho.
:D
If there's a problem, how about we pay a little more.
Last time I was skating at 23.30 and I was 1 of 3 people left
It was fantastic.
When they kick out your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun?

Yeah that's what they are eluding to. They need to keep up regular numbers in order to make it viable staying open especially for the session.

I don't not mind paying a little more either.

We can have a word with them on Friday and see what they need.

I hope we don't lose these sessions, but do think if Pioneer are determined to make a success of them there is more they could do.

Wish I could support more but Friday nights are never a good night for me as don't get back from picking up my son till about 9 from his boxing training. I seem to have little time for myself and only manage to get out once or twice a week due to family commitments and they are usually dawn raids or when the kids are at school.
I hear 50's are the new 30's so maybe I will remember them this time round :)
