How to do anything with your board and wheels eg. Cleaning bearings, changing trucks

Anyone make there own lacesavers. Remember 80's skate shoes like airwalks and vision's generally had a flappy cover protecting the laces. Been hitting the bowls at the park hard the last few weeks and have allready been through 5 pairs of laces due to knee slides! Being a skinflint laces are about £1.50 a pop is slowly adding up to more than my sk8 hi's!!

Thinking of cutting up an old pair and using the old tongues and some velcro and shoe goo to make something up.
I remember making ollie patches out of denim offcuts and inner tubes when i was a nipper guess its a similar kind of thing.

Anyone got any other ideas tips that work?
