trucks / board issue for 4 year old

Postby mesh hong » Mon Mar 07, 2016 5:52 pm

Hello all,

My 4 year old (nearly 5) has just got in to skateboarding and by his third try he is now doing kick turns. He has no problems with balance and moving about the board but even though I have loosened the trucks of his board right off he doesnt seem to have the weight to get the board to turn (hence him figuring out kick turns!).

he has a Rocket - mini board (from anti gravity in York, it wont let me post a url)

My question is what can I do to help out his turning?
are the trucks on that board not good enough or is he just too light at the moment?

At some point I will want to get him a "proper" board but he is quite small so I dont know what would be best for him and my pocket!

Any advice is appreciated.

I have also started skateboarding to keep up with him, at 42 I certainly think I'm middle aged enough ;)

Take the washers off the kingpin or you can even turn the bushings upside down.

My daughter's board has crux trucks and they're mega loose. I'm afraid that's about as much as I know. I bought the whole setup orbitfish on here.

And hello, welcome aboard!

Thanks everyone.

I was looking at the bushings last night and as you guys have pointed out they are rock hard, no wonder there isnt much flex. Replacing them with softer ones seems like it will sort it out.

Cheers!
(and thanks for the welcome)

Just ordered some of these, I will post back when I have fitted them and my son has tried them out. I couldn't easily find the Khiro bushings in the UK and they did lots of different shapes so I thought it was safer to start with the bones.

Thanks for your help.

Any good skate store will have Khiro (73a) and the soft Whites are softer than the soft Bones (81a)

i set up a really good board for my boy when he was five which he's still using two years later.

I used the smallest Krux trucks, like Andrew, and got the new Independent super soft bushings, the white ones, and they are perfect, just right for letting him turn.

I also got him a really nice mini (7.375" Deck Width) so it's a proper setup, just shrunk down.

For wheels he's using Autobahn 52mm 90a which work well on all surfaces. After some trial and error this is the setup we stuck with.

I fitted the new bushes to my sons board last night and it made a difference for the better. He is now capable of carving (albeit quite gently as he has to move his feet to the edge of the board but it'll get easier as gets use to it) and has now just got to learn when and where to do it. Even softer bushes would have made it even easier for him but so far we are both very happy with the instant results.

Thanks everyone for solving this problem for us. My problem now will be keeping up with him!
