What paint - deck and trucks?

Postby Bleary » Thu May 05, 2016 2:52 pm

Just brought a hybrid LB/cruiser/beer run set up. It's all good 'cept the graphics were shit so I've sanded it back to bare wood. Very nice it looks too now IMO - the deck's got some great 3D shapes like deep routed wheel wells and flairs - so what's best in terms of refinishing? I'm thinking some sort of coloured stain or yacht varnish to keep things subtle and show the wood (ooh, err missus  ). Anything to recommend/avoid?

And while it's in bits, I was thinking of painting the trucks. Yeah, I know they'll get chipped to buggery but those red indies on Bad Brain's new Street Sicle look the dogs. Would sprayed smooth metal paint - hammerite - work?

BTW, I'm looking for something which is quick, easy and gives a half decent result. The sooner I can bolt it together again and get riding it, the better!

I did think about an oil/wax finish for the deck as I've got a pot of this which gives a nice, not-too-shiny finish and smells great with all the VOCs

Image

I use this on my DIY longboard paddle pole and it's fine. Guessing though that once you've got an oil/wax finish you're stuck with it as it will seep into the wood?

Nope. Doesn't seem to affect the urethane and is easy and cheap to do using Rit dye. Not mine but you can get really creative - guessing these were done first with the light green, then a glue gun to 'mask off ' the random pattern, then dye dark green, then peel off the glue:

And you need no instructions really. Mix RIT in (boiling) water. Put in a container. Sink the wheels in. Let sit for 48 hours. Works also when the water cools down. Last mix I used for for sets of wheels (one set at a time) and a beenie.

Put a lid on the container. The water evaporizes otherwise.

Might try that on my zflex wheels first though

Danish oil gave a great finish on the deck. Dead easy to do too. It's now raining again so before I set it up I may dye the wheels too...

In my experience half an hour is enough time for the dye to penetrate more than 4mm in to 99a F4's. Perhaps black dye takes longer than the green and blue I used.

I always let them sit 48 h. 4 is prolly enough. Never tried. And never been in a four hour hurry.

If you want to color your trucks, powdercoating is probably the only way to go. It's MUCH more durable than regular paint, but not something you can do at home without the proper equipment.

I remember doing powder coating in metalwork lessons at school. As this was a comp in the '70s it was probably a 'low tech' method compared to the modern way. Wish I could remember how.

If your trucks are aluminium try anodising them. There are various lo tech ways of doing it for example:

It usually depends on the color, and whether or not an additional clear coat is required. If you aren't picky on color, just ask them to use whatever color they have locked and loaded at the moment, and most places will cut you a bit of a deal.

tried to dye brand new spitfire f4 wheels and bones hardcore bushings black. turned out a mottled blue/green. put an old wheel in to test out the dye depth. when done I sawed the wheel in half. dye was not even 1mm deep. ok, so rit dye = fail for me. shame, cos f4 was a not too nasty off white to start with.
