SKATE or TRY 2019

Nailed that new trick yet ?

SKATE or TRY 2019

Postby JimBin » Fri Dec 21, 2018 12:34 am

New for 2019, a game of SKATE with a few differences. You can't win and you can't lose. This is not for those who want to win at stuff. It's for those who want to learn new stuff.

1) Do any of the set tricks when you can and when you feel like it.
2) First to claim a landing OR 25ish attempts of the last trick sets next trick.
3) No time limit.
4) Video footage is optional, your word is considered true.
5) Although footage is optional, it is most welcome.
6) You can't get a letter and you can't be knocked out (well you can be knocked out if you land on your head, but you can still partake once concussion is no longer a worry).
7) When setting a trick, video not necessary although nice. Your word that you can do it is considered true. Same as landing.
8) When setting a trick, try to use obstacles available to most people.
9) We get to claim it after 25 attempts, so no need to gradually increase the difficulty. Just set what interests you.
10) If a trick isn't claimed by anyone after 3 weeks, tis open season on setting a new one.

Hopefully some people are interested. My ankle is still sore, so I probably won't skate until 2019. If anyone wants to set the first trick before then, work away. Otherwise, I will when I can skate. It feels like a lot of rules for something fairly simple ... and skateboarding doesn't have rules. I'll edit them to suit myself as necessary, anyway!

These things are ace, but I already owe tricks for several of the older games of skate.
As long as I can wipe the slate clean and start fresh I'm in!!

I like this idea. A lot.

I won't be posting any videos because I'm an ugly, uncoordinated bastard.

But I will definitely follow along.

I'm on for this too! Shame I find the first trick more impossible than an impossible - just can't get my head round it.

Will try it 25 times though.

Nicely done JimBin!

Great that more are in!

For this one, I roll fakie and do a pop shuv. I don't hold my shoulders square and my natural distaste of rolling fakie pulls me back to regular. The first few times i get a shuv and land at 90 degrees. Then i start to rotate a little more.

So basically, i shuv going fakie and don't concentrate on staying fakie.

It's at the end of the vid Corey! Switch hippy jump.
It's fun and pretty easy. It's all about timing and commitment less so about skill. Evidently, I would recommend learning normal stance hippy jumps first!
  • As a practice step - go switch/fakie on flat and jump as high as you can without popping any trick - land on the bolt heads.
  • make sure you keep your shoulders aligned with the direction of travel - turn your neck to see where you are heading but not your shoulders
  • always aim to land on the bolt heads!!
  • don't jump forward (or backward in this case) too much - stay over the board
  • jump high enough to clear the rail - jumping on the rail (on purpose) is fun but it requires even better timing, it's not an intermediary step in the learning process!
  • make sure you have enough speed to clear the rail and not fall on it.

if you can do normal stance ones, body varial ones and if you now have the switch one down, go learn:
  1. fakie pop shuv hippy jump,
  2. then fakie pop shuv hippy jump body varial,
  3. and eventually fakie bigpsin hippy jump and we will have gone full circle by merging trick 1 and trick 2!!!

I have reached 2 (fakie pop shuv hippy jump body varial), I just need to add an extra rotation and it'll be there!

Well done gents!

As I predicted I just can't get my head round this. Corey explained it to me perfectly on Monday night when he was doing his (see above) but I have a mental barrier about turning my body and board at the same time in this way. I actually think 360 pop shoves might be easier for me, so I'll give them a go as an aside.

Switch hippy jumps sound scary. But then everything does. Will try them too.

Cheers

I don´t know if I can even make it to the obstacle going switch, and I´ve never tried a regular hippie jump. But if you want to see a fat old man rolling slowly backwards toward a flatbar, then jumping off his board whilst screaming with fear - you shall not be dissappointed!

Plan9Customs, they were clean. I'd definately take them.

I called in to check if there was a new trick cos I'm skating later this morning. Thanks Glenouille! Great set and nicely done. It sounds freaky and I echo the other comments but I will try it! I take it that it is the video you posted on the did you skate today thread recently. When i wacthed the vid, i noticed the switch one and thought you were mad.
Getting out of the comfort zone and trying something new is the aim of the thread for me. Hopefully I won't leave the comfort zone for the hospital though!

Thanks man! 8)
Damn, never done one! I always ollie into grinds, so I'm keen to try!
Does the curb need a little incline (not a lot of that where I live) or can it be done on a right angled manny pad edge? Just thought I'd ask before I go and break my truck or my teeth!

Nice jump and nice grind Plan9Customs!

I usually get a slappy session on tuesdays while my son does football training, but it has been raining all day. If it is not too treacherous, I will give it a go tonight. If it is too wet, I'll try at some stage soon.

I have tried powerslide to switch before, but landed none ever.

EDIT: I tried switch a few times last night but it was very wet. I couldn't see through my glasses after a few mins with the rain. I spotted a painted curb spot the other day (not sure if skatable, ground, security etc yet) and hoped to try it yesterday morn. It was too wet, so skated the kinda covered DIY instead. I might have the car on Friday morn (I usually cycle) and if it's dry will try that spot. It's a bit far for a cycle.

@Glenoullie you can do them on a manny pad(as long as it anchored down or it'll just slide), slight incline is a little less scary but it doesn't really help or hinder with or without. I've done them on oververt curbs before. Anyhow it's just basically a frontside carve into the curb and right before you hit the curb with your front truck just unweight a little. If that make sense at all. If not I'm sure there's a ton of how to's on YouTube.

I got a switch frontside slappy today, but i didn't stay switch coming off the curb. Still good fun, though. Very happy improving going switch, what with the hippy jump and now this.
I did a frontside slappy regular as well.
I'll claim it though. Thanks Plan9 for the set.

Anyway, here is 4.

Front shuv, preferably over something (twig, string, gap, cone, whatever you like). I went for something about 2 inches high!

Pretty well past 25 tries now. Still need to get back the board to stay under me since I'm getting it to spin slightly behind me enough where I can't land. I'll spare you guys bails and flails over and over. Not taking it since I haven't landed one. I'll get them though! @Corey @undertime @doowyrag @Glenouille I know you guys have these so let's see them!

Funnily enough I struggle to get fside ones over big obstacles. It was the same for pop shuvs, took me absolutely forever to get them over a 50 cm cone.
In reality a lot of people do pop both shuv-its higher than they think but they need more speed and an earlier pop to go over stuff and that potentially means landing on the obstacle if things go wrong. I see folks popping enormous ones in games of skate but being totally unable to go over even the lowest of rails.
For me it's much harder with the fside one - I love the challenge though, I am going to try hard. I'd love to go over something big or use it in a combo. It's bugged me for a long time. I'll film on Sunday. I still owe a slappy of some nature but outside weather is truly hideous! :(
