Dropping in

Went to Crawley on Wednesday before work with the idea of building up to drop in on the 4 foot 1/4.
After loads of practice on the 1 + 1.5 foot rolled over to the 4 foot and bottled it, 4 more of these and with 2 x 11 year olds telling me to drop it and then one of them pointing to his popsicle and asking if I wanted to try it on a `proper` skateboard was all the incentive me and my Alva leopard print needed to go for it ~ made it shouting like a loon :o .
Then did at least another 20 or so to get it nailed 8)
I was totally stoked and buzzing all day :D
Funny thing is I never did them back in the day ..-

Re: Dropping in

Bloody good show.

I can't believe you have only been back on a board for a month or so. Seeing how smooth you were at Crawley last Sunday it looks like you have been skating for years.

You have a smooth style with none of the flapping about!!

Despite the comments, flapping your arms all over the place is considered very stylee by some
It only hurts until they administer the morphine.

@ Snakebite
Cheers m8, that`s very kind of you, I think you were`nt looking during my flappy bits last Sunday :)

@ Alec, SpeedSlowStop and ben g
Cheers for that guys, dropping in for me was a real mind fuck, I really had to fight against myself to do it.
I used a bit of visualisation to make the practice 1.5 foot 1/4 seem bigger and the 4 foot smaller which helped a bit. Also for me found that leaning back to my rear foot first then moving forward with momentum before dropping down helped.
.
.

Next ~ the 5 foot Crawley bowl ..- Done 8)
New next ~ Shoreham bowl  ....... Done 8)
Even newer next ~ Shoreham bowl deep end  Done  http://www.middle-age-shred.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=27381

Cheers Baldy,
for me dropping in opens the door to a different sort of sk8ing, being able to start in a bowl / 1/2 pipe with speed instead of trying to build up from the bottom and getting knackered early due to having eaten to many pies in the last decade :)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0vkQI93vfU Good advice and shes a fox

It's a bit odd but I went at it expecting a fall and sure enough I went a flyer :% but thought 'thats not so bad' and had another go. Way-hey, success! Okay it was the small 3ft half pipe but it felt good. Can't bring myself to drop the 6ft or 8ft drops but when I get to the stage where I drop the 3ft without thinking about it I will move on........

Wear your helmit and pads, bend your knees and reach towards the front of the board, lean forward pushing down with your leading foot. Leaning forward will hopefully prevent the dreaded falling off backwards.

That`s (AW) Woody, kudos to you for giving it another go after the first one, feels great to make it 8)

I got myself really comfortable (lots of practice every session) on the 4ft at Crawley before then trying the more whippy 4ft drop into the bowl there, did my first 5ft drop in last month into the bowl and apart from once when my front foot felt wrong and I fell the 5ft onto my (worth every penny) wrist guards and knee pads and did not feel a thing.
I have got very comfortable with it all now and will drop into the 6ft `shallow end` at Shoreham in the next few weeks, been giving it a good look each time I am there but the wheels being away from the wall due to the pool coping is putting me off that 1st attempt.
I found that for me leaning back first with both feet on the board then come forward with momentum, keep the board in the starting position for as long as possible so that as you come forward your front knee bends (and the rear knee) and your chest comes down toward your thigh, then push down with the front foot and

:D Managed to drop the blue at Peghill over the weekend :D It's a rush. Sound advice with the leaning back to start with. Being able to stand on the tail over the drop and feel comfortable that the drop in starts when I want it to was the key for me.

A few more drops on the blue and I will look at the yellow 7ft

Really don't fancy your next option of a drop in over the coping where the rear wheels don't touch the surface of the bowl. :?
I don't think that is the case at Peghill............ :? :?

Whoa, good work there feller 8) (AW)
7ft  you were talking about 3ft a week ago :!:
.
It`s great to start off with a bit of speed, opens up lots of new skating, I will hopefully do the 6ft Shoreham shallow end this week, went there today on my way home for a quick 40 mins and saw a plate size pool of dried blood in the bottom in front of the drop in zone which does not help to inspire
The wheels of people who do drop in seem to go under the coping onto the wall once the board starts to come forward so I just need to man up to it that first time ..-

I think the wheels going under the coping help lock it in place and stop it from going backwards, gives you somthing to push against if that makes sense.

Don't make it no easier tho!

That's not so snakey ;) as soon as you push down with your front foot the board starts to drop, if you think of relying on the coping to help that sounds to me like you are pushing backwards and that deff is not the way to go

Best thing to do is not think about what your wheels are doing and just drop in concentrating on keeping your weight centred on the board :)

Right, this isn't really in the league of Shoreham etc. but I have just taught myself to drop in off a tiny little 2ft ledge / transition. Only took about three attempts, then nailed it.

Top tips off this thread definitely helped. I kept saying to myself 'don't lean back, lean forwards'. It worked!!

Next the 4ft mini padded up ...

Yeah, after the jam on sunday we were all winding down when one of the young rippers decided to do a blunt to face plant!! I thought we were gonna turn him over and find his nose was plastered all over his face but he'd just got a crack to the head above his eye. I did the same in the deep end at Malmo last year and once we'd taken the piss a bit, (winding him up about cleaning up the claret) he was checked over and sent home to his mummy.

I am soooooo stoked, finally got the cajones up to get my first Shoreham drop in, (after 2 no goes) very sketchy but my next ones were better 8) and did not contribute to the blood pool, result :!:
Dam it`s fast, probably should not have got new faster wheels days before I did this
Can`t wait to go back and do it again, and yes in a strange way the pool copping helps because your board is angled higher so front foot placement feels less like starting the board moving until you are ready ..- %$

Cheers for that fellas, just pleased not to have gone splat,

Managed to do about another 5 before I had to go home, was remembering to turn and do stuff in the bowl with these
Had another go on my way home today after a bit of a warm up and was even more sketchy with the first 2 (pushing front foot down too soon on the first and poor front foot placement on the second which resulted in knee pad and butt bounce
Kept at it and the next ones were ok.
Will need to start being faster on the coming forward stage and wait for the front thigh to be up toward my chest before I push down next time.
@ WoodyAJ ~ tis a very nice bowl, supa smooth and fast concrete, great design, well worth a visit if you are ever down this way

Thanks Lofat :)

Got my eye on axle stalls next  I manage a roll in (v-slow) to the mini half pipe and even manage to pump up out the other side but never quite manage to start the turn :( I even bail out early to avoid the ankle damaging cock up. Aparently a partial 45 degree turn is the way to go.
They do look cool 8) esp in a mini half pipe so you can own the half pipe for a little while.

Moving double axle grinds - I'd settle for nailing that one. Way to go! ~..

The popping out onto your feet whilst catching your board is also a pretty cool looking move. I've managed a popping out to a crouch and just about stopping the board from sliding back in. But its not looking cool.

Keep at it WoodyAJ, you have done the hardest part, just need to be going a bit faster to land more upright 8)
