best trucks for carving ?

I brought a reynolds yater old scool longboard complete a while back, it came with revenge trucks, I initially liked these trucks as they are very turny but soon found out they locked to prevent wheel bite and that felt a bit odd when trying to turn sharp. I am looking to up grade my trucks when I have the dosh I`ve perchased some lovely 68mm avalons they look great but the weather has ment i haven`t tried them yet, I`ve also taken my revenges to the bench grinder to open them up a bit and stuck em on 18mm risers (blocks of ply) so I can ride them for the time being but would like some advice on truckage please for carving and maybe LDP

Re: best trucks for carving ?

I found that Holeys work quite sweet on a big ole plank for carving purposes. But I think that most traditional RKP trucks around 50 degree can be set up very carvy (Paris, Randal, etc). If board width allows it you might go down to 150mm trucks which should turn even quicker.

Re: best trucks for carving ?

Original trucks are very very good for carving. I run S10's and can plant my hand on the floor and turn around it.
However Bennets are the benchmark for LDP, with modifications though. Longer king pin and better bushings, modified kingpin hole etc.
LDP does require a different set up than a pure carving set up though. Very "turney" truck at the front and a very stable i.e not turney at all at the rear.
Modified Indys are another option.
I've not found RKP trucks, even with 50degree baseplates, wedges and decent bushings, anywhere near the turning ability of the Originals.

Warning - I run loose trucks and like to turn, I find most peoples boards to be far too tight to ride.

And you thought bearings were a geek fest

Just noticed this, truck width doesn't affect how quick they turn.
Wheel clearance, stability, foot clearance etc etc but not turning

Re: best trucks for carving ?

I'm using a heavily wedged Bennett 5 on the front and a Tracker RTS on the back of my LDP board and it carves a treat. The only thing to watch out for with the heavy wedging angle on the front truck is that the kingpin (and top bushing washer) sit closer to the ground than they normally would on an unwedged truck and so the top washer's lip can occasionally hang up on an unevenly laid paving slab edge.

I've replaced the top cup washer with a smaller flat washer and it has been fine so far.

Re: best trucks for carving ?

My experience has included Bennetts (incredible!) and Holeys (really nice)
Haven't tried any others so can't comment. I like what I have though.

Would anyone recommend a Bennett on the front and a Holey rear? :?

Holey's for me, super loose and turn in circles. i find a looser truck more stable at high speed.

thanks for the info chaps, bloody hell it`s quite a science . Seen footage of the origional s10 they looked amazing , but I slill think having the ajustability of swappable bushings is a huge plus .

For carving I don't think the S10's can be beaten, I just threw em on a deck to try them out, and haven't touched them since.
Only problem is riding a normal board with conventional trucks or RKP trucks after spending time on the s10 equipped deck, you'll probably fall off a few times.
If you want to tweak then bennets or randals but you'll end up with mountains of bushings, wedge risers and truck bolts, and you'll want a Dremel as well.

I know what you mean, family, work and a house that needs loads of work doing....Given the shit weather and tbh a bit of post injury nerves, I've not been out much bar a bit of local trundling about. I do keep meaning to get down to Hove Park for a better roll out though. I'll PM you my number, maybe we can find the odd hour on a suitably dry weekend sometime :)

Holeys all the way. Value wis compared with originals.Just ordered some with abec flashbacks. carve, slide hopefully not fall.
So I joined some local kids for a jam. Good sk8, few disasters but no injuries. I bid them farewell, coolly pushed off down the transition, hit a stone, skidded head first across concrete, grazing my arms to the bone, destroying my jeans and knees. SMOOTH

Re: best trucks for carving ?

Was a Holey man for ages but now have 2 set ups, Tiina's and mine, same home made Thai rubber tree decks, one with Holeys and Fireballs which is awesome at speed, very solid feeling but my ride with old Randal 180's (used, eBay) and new Orangutan Stimulus is a carving, sliding, electric fun fest.

I am amazed by the old Randals, even though I have some funky bushings now they rocked with yellow standard ones in.

Suck em and see, it's a brave new world... well, expensive!

Can't discount IndeeSZ! I'm digging them with Riptide fat cone/cone bushings. I don't dare go too fast with them, but it makes slowing down when carving steep hills easy while staying in your own lane even if you don't want to slide due to the deep leany turn. You can turn right back up the hill, of course sliding is more fun.

Re: best trucks for carving ?

Indeez and Indys are different trucks. Although Indeez are also traditional style trucks they are cnc machined from a block of high grade aluminium or something like that. As the name suggests they are loosely based on Indys but have a different geometry, thus ride different - apparently they have a more linear turn whereas Indys have a progressive turn. Price tag is also different, for one pair of Indeez you can get several pairs of Indys.

That said, get a pair of Indy 215's, modify the baseplate to accept taller bushings (tap out the original kingpin and install a longer one) and you are in carving heaven - hear me, I say CARVING HEAVEN!

Re: best trucks for carving ?

Just to add, I've just set up a Fibreflex deck with Bennets. Tried it with flat risers first, nice turning truck, faster turning than Indy's by a mile, but not as quick as Originals.
Tried wedging the Bennetts, just a mild one to start with but still not as quick turning as originals, however they do turn more like a conventional truck i.e the more you lean the deck the more the deck the deck wants to straighten up. Obvious really as the bushings get more compressed the harder they'll push back.
Originals don't work the same i.e the first part of the turn when you come off the cam almost feels like your unlocking the trucks and they are almost the same amount of effort to turn throughout the lean of the board.

difficult to describe but I hope you get the Idea :?
cheers

Re: best trucks for carving ?

I have 80mm Orangatang Stims & Paris 150 trucks on a Loaded Fattail.

If I wanted to try bigger, softer cruising wheels (say 75mm or even 83mm), would I be better off with wider (180) trucks?
Could I put bigger wheels on spare 180 Paris hangers (or other hangers) and quickly swap them into my existing Paris 50 degree baseplates as the need arises?
Does anyone else do this for different situations?
