bought myself some crazy wide turny trucks

I've picked up a pair of Original S10's (from someone on a facebook group), and am impatiently waiting for a deck to arrive.

When I got the trucks, one of the wavecams was broken, so I had to order some more. Couldn't find any in stock in the UK, so I tried ordering direct from Original in the US - $12 for 6 truck's worth - and took just over a week to arrive.

I've thrown them on my Lush Stallion deck, and had to put smaller wheels on because of wheel-bite. The setup looks crazy, but turns like crazy too, which is what I am after:





Once the deck arrives (a sort of pintail with cutouts - pics when I get it) I'll be looking for some wheels - currently I want something big & soft, and I'm hoping for some of those re-issue 75mm red kryps when they come out.

Not had much chance to ride it so far, as it hasn't stopped raining since I put it together - one thing I have noticed is the trucks are really heavy - kickturning a 39" deck with them on feels like kickturning a supertanker

44" of shaped birch ply - time to think about varnish & griptape, and maybe drilling/cutting the deck so I can fit the S10's without risers

Sweet!! I can definately agree with kickturning a longboard being like a super tanker!!! I've got 76mm Krypto classics on my Mindless Hunter and they a great! Not sure what trucks are on it but they are pretty "turny" lol

Don't bother with the Kryps.
71mm 78a bennett alligators are what you need.
I recommend some soft very very grippy wheels to get the best out of the trucks, you will not believe how hard you can carve these trucks, given enough grip, kick turns are really not needed.
Another tip is to run them very very loose, or as you have found out the wave cams break, I've not tightend mine from the factory supplied setting.

BTW they will ruin you for riding normal trucks even the so called turny trucks.

Just been reading up on the big green Bennetts - I like the look of them a lot, and people say good things about them, so I might well give them a go. Thanks for the recommendation.

I did think about getting stiffer springs for the trucks, but after a couple of runs up & down the drive, I think I can cope with the easy and tight turning

I tried a kickturn - those S10's weigh a ton, and the board's no lightweight either - just about managed it.

Yep kickturns are redundant, I can plant my hand and turn around it. You just need to get flexible ankles and very grippy wheels.

it's certainly no lightweight - the deck's more than ½" thick, the trucks weigh a ton - at least I didn't get the bigger Centrax wheels

It rolls very smoothly indeed though, so mission accomplished

I keep meaning to ditch the Mindless wheels, I was tempted by the Big Zigs, then I heard about the new 75mm Red Kryps, on the other hand I have always loved the look of the old bottle green Alleygators....

That looks very nice - have you tried it without the risers? How about the springs - are they black, or have you gone for the firmer red or white ones?

Wheels are a problem, in that there are so, so many to choose from

It needed the riser to clear, I like the cut-outs in your deck for that reason. I stuck with the blacks, they feel fine once you get used to the 'snap' to and away from rest rather than the progressive feel you get from a bushed truck. I hope you get a chance to use it soon !

The difference between the mindless wheels and Alligators is worlds apart I've also got some Formula one road riders which I know nothing about other thn they were cheap and they are far better than the Mindless wheels.

anytime i get up to about 15 mph it's super sketchy/twitchy.

i love messing about slow speed on S10's, but i find the right combo of trucks and bushings turny enough at slow (not as turny) - but more stable at fast.

your board looks lovely though!

the weather's been so wet here that I've not had the chance to go out on it properly yet - very frustrating.
15mph does sound like it might be faster than I want to go anyway.
My other problem is finding somewhere quiet with hills that aren't suicidally steep - there aren't any flat roads where I live, so the idea behind getting a super turny and grippy setup was so I could just carve across the slope of the hills to keep my speed down.

That's fair. My mate rides a bamboo pin with S10s on, when we were teaching the girlfriends to skate in a carpark it was even more fun than a dancer board!
however i decided i wanted to try it on a steep hill nearby... whoops!

i can imagine as a cruiser there wouldn't be much to beat it.

How do you mean exactly? did you get speed wobble or was it just alarming due to the slightly higher force you need to put in at the beginning to overcome the trucks 'spring to centre' feel ? I must admit I'd be wary about using them on a steep hill, but I've probably done 15+ on them and they felt OK. I did wonder if the snap to centre would make them less likely to speed wobble than a bushed truck where the bushes are off load on the straight ahead though. Has anyone out there bombed a 'proper' hill on them ?

Hmm, fair enough...I'd rather take note of your, albeit short learning curve than grind my own nose down on the road I'll stick to my Randalls for the steeper ones

I have been thinking about it in those terms recently.

When you snowboard you should never ride on the base completely flat otherwise snow will kick you. always on an edge even if not turning.

Great article, I think the last paragraph should be nailed to the front of the forum.

One of the greatest things about skating is its unpredictable nature, tight trucks should be outlawed.

As for RKP and SKP on the same deck, I've run highly wedged RKP trucks giving more turn at the front and less at the back which did seem more stable but I like the feel of the back end moving out.

I've also got a LDP set up with Bennetts wedged at the front and reverse wedge on the rear but it feels really sluggish to turn compared to the S10's and rarely comes out to play, and it feels like riding on stilts with all the risers on it.

My most "stable" board has 50degree Randalls with soft Venom SHR bushings, the bushings really livened the trucks up, but they still feel really nice even at moderate speeds.

I know this a oldish post now but I have trawled everywhere for some info. What is the stock tension of the springs? I rode my S10`s with the black springs from stcok and it was very twitchy, this was with the kingpin bolt flush to the edge of the nut. I then got the hard white springs and tensioned the spring the same and was really great completely transformed the ride, uber cary and stable too??? The only dodge was the kingpin came loose over a couple of hours and there was some slop in the locating lug which I didn`t like. So I wound the kingpin down so the lock tab was around 1mm lower than the knuckle giving around 4 threads on the kingpin bolt but this made it way too tight to be able to carve. I then put the stock black springs in and wound it down to the same position and again it feels great. Although i`ve not broke any cams yet im a bit concerened there over tightened. What do you guys run em at tension wise?

I run mine like this, on black springs. I'd like to try the other springs too, but haven't got around to ordering any yet.
I understand that a star washer will stop the kingpin loosening over time, but this is also something I've not got around to either. You take the kingpin out, put the star washer on the kingpin and put the kingpin back in. The star washer ends up between the round head of the kingpin and the circular recess the kingpin head sits in. Next time I'm at the DIY shop I'll maybe buy some and see if they stop the loosening, as I have noticed that my front truck does seem to loosen on its own.

Thanks for the pic, if I set up like yours thats when I had slop and they were a bit noisey, also I didn`t have as much thread coming through from the kingpin almost as though the bolt is shorter. Do you have any play or slop in yours? I believe you can add another nut as well to lock the kingpin down.

There is some slop when I have mine set like that, but they are quiet (lots of white lithium grease from the bike shop to lube them). Another thing I mean to try is to wrap something round the tab to take up the slack - not sure what I could use, maybe some thin aluminium.
I run them like that because I read that running them too tight breaks wavecams, and I don't want to have to keep buying those.
The second nut idea sounds good - ta.

Yea the tab seems to be getting damaged too on mine on the looser setup, i`m gonna swap out my stock nut for 2 axle wheel nuts as there the same tpi and go straight on.

So ive put the white springs back in which are the hardest. Swapped the nut over and wound the king pin down enough to get 2 nuts on.

I have that set up on a Vision longboard that looks like a snowboard with cut outs.

Inspired by watching videos of Brad Edwards where he ran that kind of set up, works well.

It was stable enough, but the front end felt a bit ungainly - the Randal is a higher truck than I'd normally ride any way. Like Alec, I thought I'd try it after watching 'Flow'.

Give it a go, if you ride high trucks you might well like it.

Just over a year later, less of the wide, but more of the crazy turny trucks.
These were my 21st wedding anniversary present, and I took a couple of pics to show how crazy they turn - especially the front truck.
At full turn on the front truck (there's a hard limit as part of the hangar makes contact with the baseplate) the 70mm wheels don't even hit the deck - I did think of remounting them without the supplied 5mm risers, but I have some 75mm wheels too, and they'd fit fine too.
The back truck is a more conventional truck, and turns much less (plus I can just about get the wheel to touch the deck - shame the wheel wells on this deck are at the front and not the rear).
So far only had a few trips up & down the drive, but I can pump from almost a standstill up to a reasonable speed very quickly.
I'm going to have to keep my front foot well behind the truck bolts when turning, otherwise it feels like the board will dive out from under me.

I have a C7 and C2 combo on my surf-trainer board.
De- wedged the back truck so wheels move more vertically than horizontally to match deck lean with front and make the rear
less oversteary.
Pumps "down-the-line" so easily and is awesome for practicing those round-house cutbacks ( I'm assuming you're a surfer too? ).
If so, have you checked out the Carver website? Loads of surfskatey vids.

De-wedging sounds interesting, I will give that a try.
I have found I get wheelbite from the rear wheels with my 75mm wheels fitted, so going to go back to 65mm ones.
I don't surf at all (apart from a bit of bodyboarding in summer at the local beach), so all the surf-speak is a little lost on me. Any "outsiders guides" to surf jargon you know of?

When he gets to the end of the cones he is doing what I call a "roundhouse cutback ", he says "wraparound".

On a wave, if you get too far along, away from the breaking bit you cutback to the steepest bit and continue ( hopefully ).
"Pumping down the line " generates your speed along the wave.

You probably won't need to de-wedge your rear truck coz they built in the steeper king pin angle when they re-designed the version I have, into your version.

Ta for the link and explanation of terms - I've watched both the Surf Training videos and a couple of others.
I can pretty much do the pump thing already - these seem to be the most naturally pumpable trucks I've ever ridden, and so far no need to tweak the setup.
I'm going to have to get some time on some quiet smooth tarmac and have a go at the turns and slides. I might even have a go at the skatepark if I'm feeling brave.
