Well just because there are no pictures doesn't mean that I haven't been working.

Finished the whole 1 side last night, all the slats are in, the flat has been treated both sides and the last of the slats have been cut for the opposite side. I've been doing 15-20 minutes shifts whenever I can get the time to do it. At first I didn't think that it would make any difference at all, but 2 nights work has got me almost back on track.

If we get no rain tonight, I can make a serious go at the opposite side and hopefully make a serious dent on that as well, Pictures will follow tomorrow. I'm working my ass off as I'm off to Cape Town for work for 3 days and that's taking away 2 nights of working on my ramp.

Update: 24-03-2009

Well I lost about 5 days in total due to rain as well as being away from home for a few days as well.

But I pulled finger and did some serious grafting last night till late.

I've finished all but 600mm of the garage side and treated the whole lot with another coat of carbolinium and a new product that I found called waxyol. Wax based wood treatment that's bullet proof. In fact the finish is so good, I'm going to hold off on final layer and skate it like it is for a while.

Image

The last of the flat has been cut as I had to hold off to see if everything was level with my shims before screwing it down.

Image

I fucked up a bit is misjudged one beam by about 3mm and now the final joist on the veggie patch side is short, so I'm going to double up on that one tonight to make it all kosher. My brick pillars are finally dry, so I could shim them up as well as finally let the ramp sit on the sections.

My last planks have been cut for the veggie garden side and I'm hoping to have them screwed in tonight and to give the ramp a go before sealing it and then giving final coat.

Image

Yup that's my board up the top, I just had to try it as a quarter pipe first to feel what it's like...............all I can say is shit it's fast, I think that I got it just right on the whippier 7ft transitions with the longer flat.

Image

Filling up the last 600mm of the garage side. Should have this done tonight, so at least one side of the ramp will be 100% done. In all honesty, I've ran out of money on this thing and want to get as much done with what I have. I need about 2 more sheets of 18mm and that'll the the whole surface done. The decks will be done in some scraps that I have in the garage. All on a steel frame, that too I already have.

Image

This is the final coating of waxyol which is painted on top of the carbolium. Gives it a nice green finish. We got some rain last night and the sections that were already painted are bone dry, there's not a drop of water on them at all. Wow..........very impressed. Only cost about £7 for a 5Litre and that should do the whole ramp. Just need another Carbolinium now to finish off the rest of the surface.

What's next?

I'm hoping to weld and brace in the frame for the deck this weekend for at least one side. Also hoping to get the coping in.

Stay tuned.

hehehehe, First some bad news, my daughter was admitted to hospital yesterday, so all of my free time is now devoted to her. It's just a precautionary measure, but she should be out by Friday hopefully.

And the good news is that I got my stickers from Carl, cheers mate, much appreciated.

Will update after the weekend.

Update: 30-03-2009

Well I had one of those weeks, my daughter was admitted to hospital, all fine now and I got no chance to work on the ramp except for a half day shunt on saterday and about 20 minutes on friday night.

So I made the most of it. I added the final 3 joists that the ramp needed, because I misjudged the size of my wood somewhat. In total I was 100mm off, this resulted actually from getting wood from two different places, place one listed their 1.2 x 2.5 sheets as 2.4 lenghts and the other place was spot on. Bugger. My bad. Still worked with what I got. I actually got 5 sheets of ply laid by about 8pm friday night and took a quick pump to feel what she was like. I didn't want to push it, because I was worried about that last speck of light that you try to get in before going to bed and you end up falling out of a tree and breaking your arm.......lol. 15 minutes and packed it up.

Image

Here you can clearly see the difference between the wood that wasn't treated with the waxyol and the one with the carbolinuem only. I quite like the brown finish. I'm finishing off all of the pissy small jobs that I've been putting off for a while and this includes both platforms.

Image

I have the last of my surface cut and already on my bender (aka the ramp). This includes the final 3 sections for the garage side so at least that's 100% done and some of the opposite side. I need about 2 sheets of 18mm ply in order to finish off the ramp surface, so I'me going to have to save for that, but at least I can skate it. Plus it forces me to stick to carving and pumping for a few weeks.

Here you can see the section where I was short. I have a 18mm strip that's going in there and as this is not final covering, I'm not too phased.

Image

Platforms have started on the garage side, these steel beams will be attached to other steel beams that'll run down against the wall (rawl-bolted) and then also attach at the bottom, this will be repeated 3 times and then there will be about 6 beams running accross from each one. Effectively bolting the ramp to the wall.

Image

Here's the aftermath of my slam.

Waxyol (half dry) + 97a wheels + bit of dampness on the ramp = slam.

Image

I got up to about 5cm from the top, stalled my re-entry from the backside carve somewhat and just slid out.

Here you can see the shit left on my wheels after the waxyol was still drying.

Fuck you don't half nag a lot..........

Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, it's 95% done.......lol. All the surfacing is on, another 3 layers of waxyol as well as platform frames and coping.

My wood supplier has run out of 18mm ply...............so no platform tops yet.

Also looking into the widening of the ramp.........another 1.5 meter. Will take the ramp to just over 16ft wide. Pics when I get my camera back.

doh..............I never thought of that. A 3 foot lower section does sound good. I have thought sometimes that the 4 foot ramp is a bit intimidating with learning new tricks.......hmmmmm, spanner in the works....you think that I should do 3 foot both sides, or maybe just 3 foot one side and 4 foot the whole other side?

both sides so you can set up for the track rather than coming off the higher side and having shit loads of spead

I totally agree...I had plans to add a lower section on my existing ramp...(before I moved north and grew a goaty...)......

BUT.....and a very big but.....it's all very well going back and forth on a lovely ramp, of your making...but seeing how you have steel work involved...why not make a lower section...with a bowled corner?

that was my plan anyway...nice and low so you can learn loads on it, but with a corner the sky's the limit...

By the way Carl...........1.5 meters..........

ooooooooi fuck, talk about a spanner in the works. I think that I'll get used to a lower section first before starting bowled corners....I still have to figure a way to stash all the wood for the lower section in the garage from the Mrs......

I know what you mean..........maybe 2-3 months of crappy weather a year, even though you lot would be out in the garden tanning and lighting the barbie with that weather.

To be honest, the past month has been brill. Loads of sunshine and I've even got a bit of a tan. Pissing down today though.

My last impression of UK weather was that it seems to be getting a whole lot hotter in that side of the world than what I remember.

It's a glorius day today, public holiday too, but I'm at work.

Managed to get hold of my camera that's been missing in action for a while to show at least the shots with the surface all done.....

Will update in a few minutes.

Also, I'm holding my opening ramp session for anyone who's going to be in the neighbourhood the weekend after next........ (whaaaaaaaaaaat? you never know).

I have hooked up with an oldy skater on FB as well as a mate of mine who used to skate with our group 20 odd years ago who still skates....

Should be about 4-5 people which is a good start, i'm thinking of doing a few sessions and maybe invite some kids as well.
