Harder wheels - Faster bearings
OK Mods, time to lock this thread.
I was in a meeting with an Engineer from NMB today, we were discussing some bearings I'm using at work. Got the conversation around to skate bearings, turns out Me an Joolz were right
(As if I'd post anything if we were wrong
)
I told him of our Yankee friend's claims, my how he laughed.
Anyway, a little anecdote.
When NMB check their bearings, they run them on a machine to see how much noisy they are, they can work out if they are in tolerance (correct ABEC rating) by the amount of noise they make. The ones that don't make the grade are disposed of.
They scrappers started dissapearing from the skip so they had an investigation, called the police. Turns out a couple of young scally-wags we're hopping over the fence, liberating the bearings and flogging them down the skatepark for 50p a pop. When the Plant Manager found out, the Police asked him what he wanted to do. The guy says "Give them a job, the idiots that work for me can only get 32p each for them"
Here's a conspiracy theory for you. 608 zz's cost NMB 22p to make (according to NMB guy today). They sell the scrappers for 32p. We pay about a quid for an NMB in the shops, shops pay a supplier about 50p?
Now I'm not suggesting that an out of tolerance bearing would be unsuitable for use in a skateboard/roller skate/roller blade...

I remember discussing the same with SKF rep some time ago. Interesting stuff none the less.
Who was asking about lab seals? Worth every penny if on one side you have a fluid you try and keep cool against a temperature that would cook it out.

It was only a matter of time.
I think there should be a global/permenant link to this thread on every skateboard related web-site.

I did buy them well before i read all this tosh. I have bones reds in my park board and the zoo yorks in my longboard. At least the zoo yorks came with spacers.
Anyone for a shot of DW40?
Whatever skateboarding means to you, it means the exact opposite to someone else
Come on now,
DTB is away at a Hi-Fi warm-beer Hippy convention.
SCS is not posting for the time being - we are not sure why - but would be glad to hear he is alive & well?
What's ur problem.
If people write this drivel & u can actually be bothered to waste ur life reading it, then sadly u have nobody to blame.
The minute we shut this thread down, another equally shite one will spring up - guaranteed.

Natch...The best amps had WD40 applied to the volume controls y'know.............
Anyone tried it in magic rolling board bearings? Bloke down a Yorkshire pub said it was really good in the old days....

Did I hear that titanium might be good for bearings?
Anyone with any metallurgical/engineering knowledge care to comment?
(Or was it unobtainium, or adamantium? Pretty sure it was someone down the pub who mentioned it but my recollection is hazy.

We use Ti bearings at work.
60% the weight of Steel Nomassium), but very expensive TiNitride coatings.
Can't think of a good reason to use them in a skateboard.

I've stayed out of this until now but I'll add my tuppence-worth since the thread has reignited.
I ride Standard Swiss. Shields off and a 6 to 9 monthly cleans in a citrus based cleaner followed by a drying and minimal lube with bones speed lube. Basically they're unlubricated 99% of the time.
My experience with NMBs/Generic £1 a pop sealed bearings is that there is more of a feeling of rolling resistance, I definitely prefer the way the Swiss "feel".
I can get as much speed out of NMBs in a straight line, but as soon as carving is involved I perceive a lot more "drag" from NMBs. In a head-to-head test a couple of years ago I could carve the mantub fast enough for tears to stream with Swiss in, but remained as manly as I'll ever be when trying to cause the same effect with NMBs in.
Couple this with the lack of maintenance compared to popping out and replacing NMBs as and when they go bad (they seem to need to be continually replaced) the choice to me is clear.
£36 for one set of Bones Swiss which will ride on through puddles, grit, mud with the same "feel" retained is money well spent. I reckon you might save a few quid with NMBs despite their higher MTBF, but if you don't have a spare ready to hand you can very often have a compromised skate... the lack of maintenance swings the overall value measure clearly in the favour of Swiss for me.
Plus there is "the feel".
It's there, it's definitely there!

SimonB wrote:Can we start talking about spacers now please![]()
Who uses them ?
Back in the day they were mandatory, but seems lots of kids these days dont use them with their silly little wheels
Wouldn't go anywhere without them - that's why the Indy bearings are so good, they come together and you don't have to go fishing around in old wheels looking for them.
I also reckon that's why old school skaters go faster
BTW what are 8mm spacers for?
Alec wrote:Powerflex wheels from bitd.
Ah right, would that include Powerflex 5s? Might have found a home for my spare 8mms
Alec wrote:Technically not 10mm and 8mm but .400" and .300"
Didn't know that. Seems like there's a lot of confusion between imperial and metric sizes in skating.
Shall we get started on axle diameters now?

Yes Powerflex 5's take an 8mm spacer
