It's not that Humerous

Humerus...Broken Just over a week ago :( and clean in two. Top bit of arm going one way, bottom bit going the other...nice.

Got a wheel jam at Renfrew, flew from the four foot end of the bowl into the seven foot while coming out of a carve onto the flat bottom. It was all down to some kids who'd thrown sweets into the bottom of the bowl :x The bastard thing was that I'd swept the thing out the day before it happened. I also threw a whole load of stuff out before I started out, so I clearly missed some. A couple of days after I retrieved my board from the car and found the offending item still stuck to my front wheel

So, the extensive injury list gets extended a little more.

It's looking like Three months off the board. Can anybody advise of some good skate vids to watch? Not seen much other than the old powell ones I have, Dog town and the z boys and I've seen extremely sorry lately. I'm looking for something with a fair amount of bowl or park skating in. Anything to pass the hours away.

I'll throw up a pic of the x-ray when I get one.

Joe.

I'm keeping my trap shut in order to avoid a firm thrashing

To be fair to her we were in with the consultant at the beginning of the week discussing getting a plate in, that freaked me a bit. She turned and said to me "Don't worry, you'll be out skating again" Which surprised me a little, but also made me feel 100% better. :D

increase your boron and calcium levels slightly during healing. fruits, nuts and fat free dairy. apples and carrots are good. and reducing complex carbs will stop you getting fat during inactivity.

Cheers for the tip plank, my good lady is working on this as I'm already on the lardy side of things. :D

Whats wrong with fruit and nut...Surely that's an apatiser prior to washing down your insides with a bottle of JD and twenty JPS.

Well, you don't want to drink on an empty stomach.

What? It says 'fruit' - practically rabbit food.

A few jellies and a bottle of the 'bionic tonic' will stave off the boredom better than skate vids :D

Heal well mate. Hope you're back on board by the next time i'm back in Glasvegas.

Re: It's not that Humerous

Not been on here for ages and just seen this post. Bad luck mate. Did my humerus about a month ago, though fracture is near the top and not as bad as your one. A monumental pain in the arse (and arm). Every dry day there's been since the accident, I've woken up thinking "I'll get the board out", then I try and move my arm and it's back to sulking on the sofa.

What was the reaction in hospital to your break? I'm 43 and I'm absolutely sick to the back teeth of folk saying to me "you're too old to skateboard". Doctor laughed at me, nurse thought I'd fallen off my son's board and colleagues have said I should give it all up. No danger.

I actually got so pissed off about it all, I wrote a blog piece http://adventuredispatch.blogspot.com/2 ... e-you.html Might strike a chord.

My missus has been an absolute star, helpfully reminding me that this probably won't be the last time I bust something on a skateboard. My son thinks it's cool that his dad piled into the ground at speed.

Hope you heal soon mate.

Thanks for the well wishes Gunn and everyone else, and I have to say my situation is almost exactly the same as yours. I have retorted to comments at the Hospital of "Are you not a bit old for that" With "if it'd been football or rugby, you wouldn't be saying that"

My wife has also been a star by saying "Don't worry, you'll be out Skating again" She's kept me going.

The situation now is that I went into hospital on Friday morning and got a plate and seven screws fitted. 2 weeks till I get the staples removed, then six more till my arm is able to hold any weight. Could have waited 5 weeks for this Op, but the surgeon is a decent bloke and fitted me in. I'm home and resting and will be back out skating as soon as my arm is fit enough to do so.

I hope you also heal soon and I'm off now to read your blog.

Re: It's not that Humerous

Cheers for the comments on the blog. Much appreciated. You're spot on with what you were saying. Comforting to know that I'm not the only older skater getting grief about injuries from those who simply don't get it. Glad to read they fitted you in for an early op too. The metalwork will mean you can fall on that arm again and it'll be totally indestructible, which is a bonus :)

Never skated Renfrew, though my missus comes from Barrhead originally and we're down that way a few times a year. Skated the tiny wee park at Rouken Glen, but the air was filled flying BMX bikes and I was the only adult. Be good to meet your crew and compare injuries. Keep us posted on your arm's progress.

No problemo Gunn :D

The blog is great, I've bookmarked it for future reading.

I live in Paisley, and can walk into Barhead in about five minutes from my house. Next time you are down this way give us a p.m. on here and we could meet up / go for a skate. Renfrew is awsome, reallly good park and a testement to the skate group who put in all the work to get it bulit.

There is also EK indoor which is not too far from Barhead, not bad, good fun when it's quiet.

Your more than welcome to join us for a skate, good bunch of lads our lot.

Cheers,
Joe

Aye, just getting back into work properly this week, so hope to be getting the blog updated a bit more regularly.

As for the medical staff.... yep same reaction here and they made me feel pretty small at the time. The ex. was totally unsupportive "how could you do this to me" was her response!

I don't think so, I have looked at body armour now, but I don't think it would have helped. The way I fell and how far pretty much determined the outcome. It could have been worse, I could have broken my shoulder, as it was it's a pretty clean break.

Thanks for the well wishes guys.
