Monkeyfinger down

Following a fairly standard bail on a 4 foot ramp at Yarmouth indoor today ,
the good old boy known as monkeyfinger twisted awkwardly and there was much
yelling , as calmly as he could he asked me to phone an ambulence as he had broken his
leg .
He was quite correct :(
Femur , right leg .
The ambulence crew were fantastic !
Monkeyfinger looked quite relieved when they administered the morphine !
He was less than impressed though when they were pulling on the leg to try to get the
bone back where it was supposed to be so they could brace it on the stretcher.
He said he'd be in touch to let me (or us) know how he's getting on , it's understandable
that he wasn't being over positive about skating again !
If he contacts me by phone I shall of course supply update.

Monkeyfinger >>>> heal quick my old mate !!!!

Re: Monkeyfinger down

I have just spoken to the fingerer of monkeys, the poor sod had to put up with a phone call from me whilst lying helpless in a hospital bed

From what he was telling me , it was a particularly nasty break ,what they call a spiral break.
He underwent an hour and a half operation under general anaesthetic last night.
They have fitted a rod to the bone , if they have to leave it there he will need to be ultra careful.
His young lady will be taking him his lap top in later so hopefully we'll see him on line.
I have explained that photos and x-rays are a must !

(wouldn't ya just want me to be the one cheering YOU up   )

Just thought I'd send a quick post to let you know that I am out of hospital now. It'll be a long recovery but I have no doubt that MAS will keep my spirits up.

A big thank you to all you well wishers and in particular Wolfie and his daughter for all their support at Yarmouth skatepark. That was worst time I've ever had at a skatepark

Re: Monkeyfinger down

So... nearly two weeks on from the nightmare, and slowly (real slowly) I feel like I'm making progress. I've broken bones before (lots), but this one is by far the most painful. My advice - don't break your femur. I checked out how to get the bone to heal as quickly as possible, and the perceived wisdom is that caffeine and alcohol are a no-no. So that's no skating/no walking/ no driving/ no tea/ no coffee/ no chocolate/ no beer/ no fun. Oh, and fatty or salty foods are out too, so that's a no to curries as well.

I may well jack it all in, borrow a wheelchair and go out on the piss

Anyway, in the meantime, by popular demand here's a photo. I don't have any xrays yet cos the hospital wouldn't give me a copy, but here's one of my knee I took today. It's a lot less swollen than it was, but considering they drilled a big hole in it when they operated I don't think it's looking bad at all.

BTW , it goes without saying that spending time on MAS is keeping me sane :D

thats only part of it mate - they drill a hole through the knee and all the way through the centre of the bone and screw a rod in - then they cut through the muscle in two places and bolt it in place.

as I said earlier - I don't recommend breaking your femur

Ps> thanks for fixing my photo Baldy :D

Re: Monkeyfinger down

I had an appointment with my surgeon today and he is pleased with my progress. There's still a way to go, but he can see the bone starting to heal and everything is in the right place etc.

Still hurts like fury though and I am getting a bit cheesed off with my "bone growth diet". I might live dangerously later and treat myself to a cup of tea w~

So....here are the x-rays, as i am sure you shredders want to see them :D

Re: Monkeyfinger down

My "bone growth diet" is no caffeine, alcohol, not too much fatty or salty foods. Apparently caffeine and alcohol prevent the absorption of calcium into the body. Also something in Tea stops you absorbing iron/minerals or something.

I don't really miss alcohol at all, it's tea/coffee and the odd bar of chocolate etc I struggle with - ridiculous really, I needed to break my femur to find out I'm a hopeless caffeine addict

I can walk a little now, but I need the crutches because the pin isn't fully capable of load bearing and plus it hurts like fury still. It's a month now and I'm still on Tramadol and stuff to get me to sleep. I've broken loads of other bones including my back and nothing hurt like this. Other than the pain, the main problem is BOREDOM. Sitting around all day is no fun after a while. Friends and family have been great and especially my wonderful lady :) she has bought me one of those reclining armchairs that are loved by old folk. Now I sit around all day drinking herbal tea and taking hard drugs watching daytime telly. I bet I kick my caffeine habit and end up a Tramadol junkie %$

Thank god for MAS though - I've been looking at loads of old skating vids again today.

So...one year on, and I went back in for an operation on Wednesday to remove the metalwork from my leg, in the hope it will improve my knee problems. I'm back out now and they are saying I will probably need another operation to repair my ligaments, which cause my knee to keep collapsing. Still can't believe all this is the result of a minor bail from a 4 foot ramp. Just glad to be rid of all the nuts and bolts in my femur, and hopefully another step towards getting back to proper mobility in time for summer.

Oh man I wish you all the best. I broke 2 bones in my foot this time last year and it took me months to get back on a board. Your injury makes mine look like a scratch.
I looked at all of the diets and how quick the bone would heal etc but i think once you've reached 'Middle-Age' then it's going to take a while.

One year on. I have video of me a year on from breaking my tib and fib - my 'anniversary skate'. I've never got round to getting my metalwork removed, though I have heard that if you are likely to break it again that it is a good idea to get it out.

You'll have a little more recovery time now with even more time for trawling MAS and YouPube. Heal well (again).
