Re: Vert as it should be skated - Neal Hendrix on Heffalump

Last board I skated in '92 before turning my back on the whole scene was a New Deal NH slick bottom. Best board I ever had. Wish I still had it, so I could copy that shape and order a batch from one of the various pressing factories in existence these days... Not many vert guys had boards coming out in '92 and the few that did certainly didn't have a round tail. The NH did and how fucking advanced it was! It'll be interesting to see what shape his 'proper' model is going to have. 8)

Don't think they are doing pro models as such. I've totally bought into the Elephant hype! Just which one to get first? Rogue or Jersey Devil?

Maybe not but NH may still be involved into designs/shapes etc... Anyway, the JerseyD reminds me a lot of the NH I mentioned previously but the Rogue has that Grosso style big flat nose that I find very appealing... I'd say go for a JD if you're more street/mini oriented and Rogue if you're more into pools/big minis/vert...

Full cab kickflip indy is pretty spin to win, but always been a big fan of Hendrix, was going to post this earlier myself.

This is a cracking example of vert skated very well

3 back to back 540's with some other stuff or 2 720's or a single 900 seem to win X-Games if you can do it in 2 runs.

So sadly true. X-Games, Dew Tours, Maloof Cup... These dudes all do the same stuff, nobody has a different style anymore, hardly anybody do liptricks (well mostly... I recall B.Lasek doing a fs. bluntslide at a Dew tour but only on his last run, knowing he had the contest already won...). I'd like to see these guys in a relaxed environment to see their favourite tricks instead of the contest-winning ones...

Re: Vert as it should be skated - Neal Hendrix on Heffalump

All the vert stuff that the 'mass' public see these days is the x games, dew tour stuff.... and you've hit the nail on the head.

I was watching some dew tour vert comp this week and I ended up turning it off.

I wasn't interested in watching some ex-snowboarder hit nothing but 540's, 720's and bail on 900's..... yawnnnn.

All the other skaters were pretty much the same too.

There was no style, barely any lip tricks. Where were the grinds, inverts, interesting airs, rock n rolls, quirky individual tricks.

It was just dull.

If I'm watching any skating I want to see the style invention and flow.

Street seems to be a bit similar now too. I'm bored watching massive stair sets and humungous handrails.

Bring back the style!

This video has me stoked as much as the Slug hurricane picture in RAD back in the day.
Method to fakie, and anything to tail.

Great vid, gonna repost it to the crackbook.

Thanks for that. I just had one of those magic spine rushes, then raised my hands in the air as my mind raced back to a field in the middle of nowhere with the sun rising in the summer of '92. Tune :)

You're just looking in the wrong places.

Also not sure who the ex snow boarder is as Shaun White is still very much involved in the snow. Skaters should also be careful when slating ex snowboarders - Danny Way and John Cardiel were both pro snowboarders.

Saw Neal Hendrix skate the old Morfa ramp in Swansea around 91/92 along with Chris Miller and Buster Halterman, he was the stand out rider of the day for me... would'nt mind seeing any of them again they know how to keep you interested in watching vert.
Probably was'nt long after this that i too found myself in a field with my hands in the air listening to some interesting tunes, actually i was found in a lot of them fields in the Westcountry, i think i left part of me there!

Always seemed to be fields or warehouses near Swindon for me. We'd go from Bristol to some service station to some service station (repeat lots) end up near London then end up in Swindon. Seem to remember a massive quarry somewhere in Wales too.

Wasn't meaning to slag - just on a rant as I was hacked off that these guys were making vert A - look boring and B - just a rotation competition - these kickflip grabs are pretty boring 5th time in a row too - there was just no variation.

I don't snowboard but what I see on TV is similar - biggest air, most rotations/flips and not too much else - this is what is being portrayed to the mass public.

Now I know there is good stuff out there but if the big guns and comps are only showing one side, it just makes something I love to watch seem really bland which saddens me a bit, and probably puts some kids off too - kids who may be inspired by something they can see as less of a 'sport' (that's what it's like with the cheesetastic commentators).

I probably take back the ex snowboarder comment as I don't know much about it other than what I've seen, but it ain't half as good to watch as skating (in my opinion, of course!) - ALL the guys competing were guilty of the same thing.

Cheers,

If you were near Swindon then they were probably the Ridgeway free parties, no doubt I was there too :) The M4 service stations were just as much fun - seem to remember some quarries too but didn't think we went as far as Wales, could have done though, who knows. Bristol yes, loads

Re: Vert as it should be skated - Neal Hendrix on Heffalump

I watch skating on X-Games and Dew Tour, etc if I can but for years the BMX has been more individual and progressive. OK still spinny winny on BMX 'street' but at least there is more stuff thrown in too and each run is different.

X-Games rail jam stuff leaves me cold.

Skate vids with rails and ledges leave me cold. Been done to death for the last 20+ years.

I appreciate the skill of someone doing a switch wotsit double crook to dark banana slide 270 ninja macaroni out but it doesn't excite me. Some one doing huge travelling method fakies on vert does. PROPER maydays! Sick as fuck those. Tweaked hand plant to fakie. There should be a sperm smilie to show you've just spunked over your keyboard at such radness.

I think this is the smilie - (w)

not the context it is meant but the closest to what you say - totally agree about x-games and rails etc. Things should be mixed up more - variety is the spice of life, after all......

Liked that 8) ... also agree, all the robot "perfect run" skating in vert comps these days sucks ... most of the skaters don't even look like they're enjoying themselves.

Thankfully there are a few still doing the kinda stuff I like to watch, Sandro, Perelson, Ueda, Barros etc

Rad little clip of Hosoi here, the Indy air alone gives me the raging skate horn  ...

Re: Vert as it should be skated - Neal Hendrix on Heffalump

Plenty of decent vert skaters still around, they just don't compete. The likes of Schaaf, Hewitt and Nav's all kill it. It's a shame rumble in ramona doesn't happen anymore. Was good to see the old names, and that the comp big hitters do far more than there x games runs. Rune always kills it in these situations. Would have liked to have seen Bob Gnar there.

Pretty much looks like the best contest ever, and Max destroyed that ramp. To anyone who aint seen coverage of these 3 contests I suggest you track em down on youtube asap.
