Is this a spacer I see before me?

Praps summat Julius Caesar might have said.....

Last time I messed about with these things guys the bearings had spacers fitted
between them. The set of Spitfires I got the other week didn't have any fitted
as a result at the Mo my lovely new Bones ATF's I got from James don't
either
I've messed around with vehicles all my life and guess what? All the wheels
always have spacers fitted. I think I've already answered my own question
guys but what do you think?

Spacers yes, but make sure right size!!

For what I know they're like a quiet bass player... not very noticeable but better than none... I use 'em simply because, let's face it, they hardly break the bank...

Don't bother with the 8mm ones as it's only the kryptonics that use them. Try and get the steel ones rather than the aluminium ones as the ally ones tend to deform easily.

As wether top use them or not it's a big yes from me

But never used spacers tbh and no probs regardless the hype

Bearings tend to get a shit lad of side play if you don't use them and get lumpy and slow quick in my experience

After moving to super-well-too-bloody-expensive bones that come with spacers as standard (although their wheels still don't run completely true, nice as they are) I have to rock the spacers out of principle - especially after deforming normal metal shield bearings so easily, to the point they barely rolled - seriously, one session, if that.

I don't know if there are wheels spec'd tightly enough their inner race bit doesn't knock a spacer out of whack, but having them in there can only help the issue. Other than that, yeah probably Tektons.

I Also use spacers they make a big difference.

Not sure on bearings with spacers as the spacers fit the wheel not the bearing.

If the wheels were poured accurate then you would not need spacers.

Wheels with solid cores are possibly better.

Also each wheel will require slightly different sized spacers.

There's also Zealous bearings as a cheaper alternative to Seismic/Biltin. I believe they are US based but shipping to UK didn't seem too expensive when I last checked.

Never used em, I understand the idea behind them, but to me can and do damage inner bearings case,can't be that accurate with all factors taken on board to work as the idea suggests, but what do I know

Well I got some, 10mm ,steel, put em in , and to be honest, wheels spin better, less rattle, me likes em now

I'm with you Pearce - maybe in downhill or the like things are a bit closer to precision engineering but on your average board the trucks/decks/wheels/bearings seem to be constructed a bit wonky style to not quite defined standard sizes, and are then bit-by-bit pumelled until destruction as all boards should be!

Ps. I have used spacers and not used spacers in the past, and can't tell any flipping difference at all, so don't bother now! Maybe there is some sideways pressure on the bearings without spacers, but to be honest the Bones Reds/Mini Logo bearings I've tried are so rattly and poorly made I can't imagine they would last long anyway. As a poke in the eye for the modern world I have NMB bearings on both my boards now - they roll quick as you like, are cheap as chips, and even seem lubricated which is nice!

Truck axles are traditionally 5/16" which equals 7.9375mm, 608 bearings have an inner diameter of 8mm (the 8 in 608) meaning that there is a clearance of 1/16" (0.625") if both axle and bearing are spot on. (which in all reality they won't be)

Having a correctly sized spacer (width wise) will allow you to snug down the locknut to get rid of bearing slop, all dependent on the use of speed washers though so you have, truck hanger/speed washer/bearing/spacer/bearing/speed washer/nut

then again it's only a skateboard...

Wheel bite

This time last year when I started back I tightened my trucks so tight the rubbers exploded . Now there. So loose I get wheel bite always ( but it never biters me to disaster )
I run Indus with bones medium bushings with the nut do lose it's half on . I have to use industrial blue loctite on the nuts just incase lol .
I mainly live got pipes , pos and bowls now . You gotta get loose of you wanna stay up ! Plus I found after never being able to ride lose , by going quarter of a turn each ten mins or so it opened up so many new doors for me.
Rad stands for ride and destroy remember !!!

Unless your using Kryps (8mm) then stainless steel 10mm every time!

If your compressing the bearing without them then you will allow the centre race to 'wonder/drift' on the axle ,this causes the ball's to cut the faces of the internal and external race prematurely wearing out the unit.
The lack of spacers also means in order for the wheel to run free you won't be able to compress the wheel and it will sound like a Granny's hip joint before replacement.

Yes, I would imagine that the wheels and/or cores are produced from a multi cavity mould.
Variation in sizes and/or wear on the tooling will produce slight differences in the dimensions as will temperature of the material, tooling and ambient temperature.

Maybe not a lack of quality control, I'm guessing that they are inspected to ensure that they are within tolerance.

I've never run spacers... i was helping my buddy settup his deck and i gave him some xtra bearing i had lying around. He runs spacers "lets you run the wheels with no slack" ... yes indeed it does but man that deck WAS SLOW.. back them off for some play and it was NICE - but he was like "this deck is way too fast!!"

i like a bit of side to side play in my wheels, and lately i'm running bearings with no shields either! Never run speed washers either!

People always crank the wheels on and they run tight as soon as you do this it's already done the damage to a new bearing, a little mechanical sympathy goes a long way. Just nip the nut up a little at a time until there is no play, hold the wheel and use a light grip with you finger tips and nip up the nut till the wheel is snug. If your using used bearings they prob dead anyway.
