I can imagine it being much better for a kid. Let me know how it feels on the pool board if you try it.

Not today but grabbed some Indy 215s for my big boy Scram deck. 169s with 3 washers spaced out and they were still magic carpet beyond belief. Also grabbed the FFFURTHER video from Western World. Got a set of wheels from my in-laws last week. Of course they were the wrong shape(conical instead of classic) so bought myself the right ones. A couple of sheets of Mob since it’s almost time to set up a new deck.

Been using the new griptape on my cruiser and love it. Can use any shoes and not worry about ripping them to shreds and feet are still locked in.

TW1ST1, Do you think it is grippy enough to do ollies and other tricks?

I got my kids little decks and they have a foam, non-abrasive grip tape. Does this sort of thing exist for regular sized decks?

(Long story: VW buses don't have a center console, but there is a table mount arm behind the driver that can swing around. I want to make a center console out of a skate deck, cutting holes for drinks, mounting a speaker underneath and with foam tape on top.)

Thanks for any leads!

So far, I have skated them on ultra smooth and slippy polished concrete, a paved plaza type, wet tarmac, and chipped tarmac.

They are great. My back 180s have improved and the vibrations aren't killing my knees. They are hard but not hard. They grind and slide nice on curbs and ledges. Lipslides have gotten easier. They seem lighter that the size suggests.

I haven't tried crusty crust yet.

Update - the wheels are still great. They are no longer not as slippy as they first seemed, but they still slide nice. The v shape doesn't slappy as easily as more classic/teardrop shapes, but still slappys ok, it just takes slightly more effort. The fuller riding surface seems to affect crooks - i feel like the wider contact patch without a rounded wall digs into the ledge a bit, this may just be either my skills or my imagination. It is slightly the same on hurricanes. But, the lock-in is better on curbs, ledges and bars. And they are smooth over all types of ground.
There is a shitty footpath from the covered diy to where i park. Even if it is wet i skate it (unless flooded) to clean the gunk off he wheels from the covered diy. These wheels make it seem skatable.
I love skating them, and there is no sign of flat spots (please don't jinx it).

That looks like it’s going to be a rad set up @JimBin. Just curious have you ridden Indys for any length of time? If so I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Aces after you’ve used them for a bit. I have a sat of 00s but can’t really compare them since the smallest Indys I ride are 149s. I’d love to hear an apples to apples comparison. Sorry for hijacking. Again looks like it’ll be a rad set up.

Plan9, I can't really do an indy comparison. I haven't skated indys in about 7 or 10 years. They may even have been stage 10. I just found them wobbly with no turn.

Right now, I am on old ace 44s. I retired them as the kingpins kept catching. The ventures were shortening the tail too much on the current deck so i grabbed the old aces from the shed and then wondered why i hadnt stayed with them. Hence the new aces. Laziness stops me putting the new ones on the current deck. I'll wake up and do it soon.

What i know about ace 44s (my current are old, think the bushings are different in the new set so this is from the old ones):

Break in sucks. Big time. I think the new ones are supposed to be faster to break in, I'll let you know. But the old set was painful.
However, it was well worth it. They turn beautifully. You can do U turns, not C= turns.
They grind like butter on concrete especially. They are softer than indy and wear quicker (although the rate of wear slows down as you eat into the truck).
Minimal wheel bit with 54mm square wheels.
They remind me of trucks in the 80s - you think where you want to go and the board goes that way.
There are new ones coming soon - not sure what this means though. There are rumours about changes to sizing and materials (harder alloys, titanium axles, hollow kingpins, lighter baseplates) but i don't know for sure.

Hope this helps. I'll take a photo of the old ones and let you know how the new ones go.

Thanks. I own a set of Aces but they’re 00s so comparing them to 159/169/215s is apples to oranges.
Looks like the new ones are going the way of Indy sizes so new 77’s are going to be the same as 169s, 66s 159s, and so on.
Bought a Lucero street thing yesterday and some bearings. Pics when they get here.

Ace’s use a Stage 4 geometry, they do turn very well. The metal is a bit softer. I’ve got several early sets and the stock bushes were great but quite soft, if you like floppy trucks you’ll like them. I’ve switched the bushes in mine. Overall Aces are a decent truck.

Looks like it, but nothing confirmed yet. The new 44s are going to be 8.25, i think. I like the current 8.38. I have skated my old set on 8.25s to 8.8s with no problems.

TonyB wrote:Ace’s use a Stage 4 geometry, they do turn very well.

I knew they were based on earlier indys, but didn't know the exact details. Wikipedia gives stage 4 as 1984. They do turn very well. My current ones are turning perfect. Really don't want to skate my new set (still the old classics), but the kingpin is catching and the grind doesn't feel as buttery with the axle.

TonyB wrote: The metal is a bit softer.

I know. It grinds great on concrete. to begin with, it felt like the trucks wouldn't last long as grooves started very quick, but the wear slowed as i ate into the metal. I think the new aces are going to use a harder aluminum. I wonder how they will grind.

I had to get a tooth pulled out yesterday and was too fuzzy to skate in the afternoon. To make up for no skating, I gripped the deck, added rails and stuck the trucks on. The screws with the pig rails wouldn't fit in the holes as the screw heads were bigger that the opening. The same happened with 2 holes in my last set of rails and i just widened the 2 holes with a drill. I couldn't be arsed widening all 10 holes, so i bought smaller headed wood screws. It seems fine now.

My current deck is floppy. It feels like one or two plies are cracked, although i can't see any cracks. I'll probably get 2 more sessions on it and then swop my wheels over. Really dreading the new trucks to begin with, but i know it is the right thing in the long term.

Deck looks great and love the grip @JimBin. I can’t compare stage 4 since at that time I was on my first real skateboard(non variflex shit end) and had a set of thunders. Even if I had that was so long ago I wouldn’t remember anyhow. I do like loose trucks though. Like shake the board and the trucks rattle and flop loose. Just kind of wondering how and apples to apples comparison would be from someone who’s ridden both recently.

I can't do solid grip for some reason - it bothers me. I have to have some top ply showing.

I can't properly remember what tricks i liked doing in the 80s, never mind how trucks 'felt'! I do know that i liked skating, though.

Not really buy today, but rediscovered a purchase that I'd forgotten about that I made on my last US trip in Sept/Oct 2019 , after a long period of inactivity got kind of forgotten, Alva Mixed set of 59mm 101a single conical clear cored wheels, these will be used on my next outdoor session :D

It’s almost the same as my go to shovel. Same dimensions but tail is a little wider, nose is a tri point, has a very slight stinger shape. Nose, tail, width, and wheelbase are all the same so it’ll work.

Shaped although doesn't look it in the pic, 9 1/4" x 32.6, wheelbase 15 1/4, wide tail, Wheel Wells & strange routing, not too batshit graphics with lenticular swirl

Rad shape @Brian S. Let us know what you think of it when you get it set up. Haven’t heard any thoughts about Madness decks yet so I’m curious. Bought 2 roller skates hangers and baseplates today for a ‘little’ summer project. Hopefully it’ll ‘turn’ out well.
